This undated map outlines the 100 counties in North Carolina. The map was collected by George Masa and probably annotated by him. Born Masahara Iizuka and raised in Japan, George Masa (1881-1933) emigrated to the U.S. when he was 20 years old and, in 1915, came to Asheville, where he lived the rest of his life. In 1931, Masa was named to the three-person nomenclature committee for the North Carolina Park Commission and had the responsibility for accurately naming the peaks, streams, and other features.
