Map of North Carolina

  • wcu_great_smoky_mtns-5262.jpg
  • This map was created in 1882 by the North Carolina State Board of Agriculture and is inscribed to Thomas J. Jarvis, governor. Towns with populations over 500 are listed as are railroad lines. A note at the bottom right indicates that the western mountain section of the state was surveyed by Arnold Guyot of Princeton. While the map was made decades before the establishment of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, several of the park’s most popular peaks are marked on the map. Note also that Cherokee is called by its traditional name “Quallatown.” Cherokee tribal lands, today’s Qualla Boundary, is not indicated.
