  • This section of the 'North Carolina Highway's' map for 1939, issued by the North Carolina State Highway and Public Works Commission (Raleigh, N.C.), features western North Carolina. The map shows Cheoah Lake at Tapoco, N.C., Lake Santeetlah near Robbinsville, N.C., and Lake Junaluska near Waynesville, N.C. The dams that would create the future Lake Glenville in southern Jackson County and Lake Fontana in Graham County, N.C., and Swain County, N.C., had not yet been constructed. The newly realized Great Smoky Mountains National Park is on the map, along with such prominent features within the park as Gregory Bald, Clingmans Dome, Mount LeConte, and Mt. Guyot. Other highlighted destinations on the map include Pisgah National Forest, Nantahala National Forest, the Cherokee Indian Reservation, a trace outline of the planned Blue Ridge Parkway, Waterrock Knob, and Mt. Mitchell State Park.
