  • u 9501 St. Andrews Way Silver Spring, Md. 20901 April 9, 1970 Mr. Richard W. Iobst Box 373A Culowhee, N. C. 28723 My dear Mr. Iobst: It was good to chat with you, by phone, the other day. Your offer to meet with Mrs. Kephart and me later in the day was appreciated, particularly since your schedule was already quite full. After talking with you we were in McKee (?) classroom building. A gentleman introduced himself as Professor Sossomon, asked if he could help us, and then expressed considerable knowledge of, and interest in, my father's work. I am therefore sending him a copy of this letter. When you spoke of Frome's Strangers in High Places I indicated that the Kephart family is not entirely pleased with his chapter on Horace Kephart. We have no desire to perpetuate a public disagreement. However, since Western Carolina University may now be the repository of some of Dad's effects, and you may therefore wish to have a file of factual material concerning him, there is enclosed a copy of my letter of July 26, I966 to Mr, Frome. My letter to the Editor of American Forests on the same subject appears at pp 2 - 3 of the February, 1967 issue of that magazine. In a pleasanter vein, there is also enclosed a copy of A. P. Sweet's biography of Horace Kephart that may provide some additional fill-in material. Blank you again for your courtesy and interest. Mrs. Kephart and I hope that, on our next visit to the Smokies, we shall have the pleasure of meeting you. In the meantime, we shall be glad to learn whether some of lad's papers are still with the University. In turn, whenever you are in Gatlinburg, either Mr. Ross Bender or Mrs. Shirley McHan will undoubtedly be glad to show you the material that is now in the Park Service files. Mr. Bender is Chief Naturalist of the Park. Mrs. McHan is Treasurer of the Great Smoky Mountains Natural History Association. Their offices, and Dad's papers, are in the Visitor Center, near Gatlinburg. Sincerely, George 5. Kephart
