Canopus AS-9 #4 & French Colonies. 1927 – 1931 – The Canopus was the Flagship of the Submarine Divisions of the Asiatic Fleet, & later was attached to Submarine Division – 10 & also Flagship to Division – 5. 7 Dec. 1941 – the aging Canopus was at Cavite Navy Yard as tender to Submarine Squadron 20 in the days that followed, she repaired ships that were damaged in 1/72

Note cards with a brief history of the 1919 passenger liner SS Santa Leonora that was converted to the submarine tender USS Canopus (AS-9) in 1922. Samuel Robert Owens (1918-1995) was stationed at Cavite Naval Yard in the Philippines when the United States entered World War II. He was a member of the crew of USS Canopus, which was actively involved in the defense of the Bataan peninsula until the fall of Bataan on April 9, 1942. The majority of the crew of USS Canopus, including Owens, were captured by the Japanese at Corregidor, and became prisoners of war. Owens remained a POW until the end of the war and received the Silver Star and Bronze Star for his service.
