  • Two Million Acres in the Southern Appalachian Mountains Cherokee National Forest Nantahala National Forest Pisgah National Forest Smoky Mountain Park TIGER, GEORGIA development of the recreational resources of a National Forest and through the cooperation of the District Forester at Washington, D. C. we have secured from the Forest Supervisor of San Isabel National Forest a successful working model for our International Playground in the Southern Appalachian Mountains. All our work will be under the supervision of the U. S. Forest Service and in close cooperation with that service. The Forest Supervisor at Pueblo writes as follows; to-wit? "The Cooperative development of the San Isabel Forest now has an active record of eight years. As you are possibly aware, this Forest has adjacent to it and surrounding it many centers of population whose residents are largely dependent upon the attractions of the forest for their outings. We are also so situated that the Forest is the first mountainous region encountered by visitors coming from the plains east and south. The possibility of making the Forest attractive to these people naturally presanted possibilities to the local interests for making this a TOURIST center, thereby deriving additional revenue to the business interests, as well as providing recreational facilities for its own people. The idea was then presented of advertising the Forest as an entire unit rather than picking our any particular section or sections. The Forest, with the outlying country, became known as the San Isabel region and the cities interested in its development as the United Cities of San Isabel. This arrangement has worked out in an admirable way and publicity efforts are pooled under the above name." The San Isabel National Forest is 651,000 acres. Our PLAYGROUNDS are within the trade area of such cities as Asheville, Hendersnnville, Greenville, Anderson, Athens, Atlanta, Rome, Chattanooga, and Knoxville. Within this circle there are a large number of smaller cities, giving us a population many times greater than Western Colorado, the San Isabel Region. Prior to the announcement by our State Highway Department on Jany 1st that we would have before the end of this year four through paved trunk line roads, it was necessary for us to do our work through local organizations. Since that announcement was made, we have received offers of cooperation and assistance from other organizations throughout the country and as far West as Bluefield, W. ?a., Cincinnati, Ohio, and Chicago. The time has now arrived to merge all local organizations into this one, Appalachian Tours, Inc., headquarters at Bluefield, W, Va., is now getting (but 50,000 maps routing every tour in Eastern America to this PLAYGROUND. Their Slogan is "Between the Great Lakes and the Gulf through the Mountains."
