if he has not done the matter justice. Here I am to do your bidding and in fact the history of the Western District from Kirks raid to Morganton in August 64 till the surrender May 10th. I am of the opinion that matter is not generally known through the state. We are claiming first at Bethel, last at Appomattox, but nothing of the affair in Jackson Co N.C. a month latter. In a letter of July 19, 1901 to Walter McKenzie Clark, Associate Justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court, A. Gordon is writing on behalf of W. W. Stringfield. He is informing Clark of a few historical errors, most notably that it was not Major Graham who was the last man in N. C. to leave the Confederacy. Gordon explains that a month after Appomattox, on May 9, 1864, a battalion under Lieutenant Colonel James R. Love of the 69th North Carolina Troops had a skirmish with some federal troops in Haywood County N.C. On May 10, the military district of Western North Carolina surrendered.
