  • CAMPUS VIEWS Our Take Mountains to the Arch Nathaniel G. Evans, Co-Editor-in-Chief On Thursday, Oct. 25, I loaded up on the last of nine buses at 5 a.m. and embarked on something like a 12-hour ride to St. Louis, Mo. We had a stop in Nashville at a mall for lunch, endured the switching of the time zone, and con- tinued onward. We finally arrived in St. Louis at around 5 p.m. and then 490 people shoved their way into Busch Stadium for a catered dinner. Ihave traveled pretty far beforeoutside of the United States, even (Japan). Despite that, though, St. Louis is the farthest I have been from home while remaining inside the country. St. Louis is a very cool place. But, immediately upon arrival at Busch Stadium, home of the Cardinals, I found myself in a crowded room filled with Cullowhee. We had the building to ourselves, but our gracious hosts found it fitting to give us a taste of years past with shows from the past of the Pride of the Mountains. That wasnt the good stuff, though. Our hotel, the St. Louis Union Station Hotel, is a five- star hotel crafted out of an old train station, which we didnt get to spend a lot of time in. We did, however, get to spend a lot of time in St. Louis. A group of friends and I rented these Lime scootersthe company sends out these electric scooters that rent for one dollar and ride at about 15 miles per hourand zoomed around the city on them the first night, seeing cool places and getting great cookies from Insomnia Cookies. It was quite fun and I suggest that everyone on campus and in the area check out their website and sign the petition to bring them to campus. The next morning, we went out to the arch. I read about the arch in the Percy Jackson books as a child, so I had a bit of an expectation as to what I was going to see, but I was completely unprepared for the 630-foot monument. Its built on this mathematical principle, making it as wide as it is tall, which is an impressive sight. Riding up in it required these tiny elevators, no bigger than six by six feet, and prob- ably smaller, which seated five people, and a three minute ride. The room up top was a lot smaller than I had expected it to be, but given that it was 630 feet in the air, I should have known. The view was spectacular. The Mississippi river is so wide, even in St. Louis, where its relatively nar- row (its widest point is roughly 11 miles across. Its defi- nitely the largest river Ive ever seen, but it was amazing to look down on it from the arch, despite the cloudy and rainy weather while I was up there. The best part was the college band PotM met there. The University of Wisconsin Eau Claires Blugold Marching Band is a group nearly the size of PotM--400 members-- and a lot of sound and spirit. We got to spend about half an hour hanging out with them before performing the Star-Spangled Banner together and watching them perform their show from the front sidelines at the Bands of America Super Regional. It was certainly one of the coolest things I have ever been a part of, and Im glad I was able to be there.
