  • 10 Features March 24, 1994 Western Carolinian Dog-days at WCU: Are they numbered? Jeff Leatherwood Staff Reporter An estimated ten canines are well-known visitors on our campus. With such diverse names as "Butterfly," "Cat," and "Lady," ifs almost like having another subculture in the melting pot of Cullowhee. Contrary to popular belief, these animals who lounge around the Dodson Cafeteria area and race speeding drivers are not homeless strays. Nearly all of mem are owned by people of Cullowhee who allow their pets to roam free for whatever reasons. Jennifer Schnegg, a junior Biology student, appeared to empathize with our four- legged friends when she said,"the owners should keep them at home and pay more attention to them. Reckless drivers and some of the students are hurting your pets." Stray dogs are removed by Security to the Animal Shelter, where any licensed dogs are returned for a fee to their respective owners. Wilderness summer school course prepares for second year John Everson Staff Reporter Western Carolina University's Parks and Recreation program is pleased to offer its second annual Wilderness Education Expedition Course. The class will begin July 6 and will last through August 7 and is open to all majors. The course is limited to ten students and costs $1,250 (which includes the tuition for summer school academic credit), but presently there are only three slots left. WCU is the only school in the Southeast offering the program. This course takes place entirely in the fields of Western North Carolina, and the learning experience includes rock climbing, backpacking, canoeing, kayaking, and basic survival skills.
