  • A2 February 25, 2016 Anna Crisp Staff Writer The Matching Dona- . tion Challenge is an event being held by The Community Table of Sylva starting on Jan. 27 and ending on May 25. Any donations in re- sponse to the challenge will be matched up to ' five thousand dollars by an anonymous donor. The Community Table is a 501 (8) nonprofit organization dedicated to providing nutritious meals to our neighbors in need in a welcoming environment, said Amy Grimes Sims, Executive Director of the organiza- tion. The Community Table has been in operation since 1999, opening its The Greek Jessica Potter Staff Witer Greek life is a popu- lar and exciting way for students to become more involved at their university. It is com- posed of Greek orga- nizations that contain individual chapters, or sections, of fraternities and sorority members. Greek life is not only a way to get involved, but it is a commitment to volunteer work, to meeting new friends and to supporting a unique philanthropy. For many students, like Veronica Shaver, Greek life gives them the opportunity to find just what they needed to feel more at home at Western Carolina University. Shaver is a new member of the sorority Alpha Gamma Delta and belongs to the Theta Omicron Chapter here at Western Caro- lina. The purpose of The Community Table is to provide a delicious and nutritious meal to anyone in need, and the compassion does not end there. The organization also has a food pantry program that provides groceries to individuals who do not need meals every day but may need help with having enough food for the week. Sims has been working as the Executive Direc- tor of The Community life: Alpha last year. I had sev- eral friends that went through recruitment last year and it sounded fun so I totally regret- ted not seeing that soon enough, Shaver said on her newly accepted bid. Many other people seem to be in her posi- tion throughout their years at Western Caro- lina as many students do not take advantage of the numerous opportu- nities provided to them, including Greek life. In order to become a part of Greek life, there are time periods within the first month at the beginning of each se- mester that allow you to sign up for rush week. In the fall or the spring, whichever recruit- ment week you decide to participate in, you will pay a fee of thirty dollars and receive a t-shirt. The fee also cov- ers expenses for Greek organizations to host their events. Furthermore, recruit- ment week is compiled of meeting sorority and sseuapen oe The Community Table hosts Matching Donation Challenge Table for eight years, but she began as a volunteer. T wanted to go into the nonprofit field, and I was fortunate to be able to do that with an organiza- tion I strongly believe in, doing such important work, she said. Sims continues to be inspired by the generos- ity and compassion of the community and the lives that the organization serves. In 2015 alone, the Community Table served a record of 27,891 meals. The organization also distributed 13,298 boxes of groceries through the food pantry program. We continue to serve new families and indi- viduals each day. Sims said. The organization began serving 45 new fraternity members. For my recruitment, this was set up in the UC as a walkthrough. Its super relaxed and the least stressful of all the nights, said Shaver. The nights after the initial meeting of the different organizations allow members to begin interacting with the organizations individu- ally. Throughout the week, you start to de- cide which organization you feel would best fit you and your interests. The last day of this week is called Bid Day. This is when you and your future organi- zation get to publically announce that you have accepted their offer to join them. During recruitment week, there are differ- ent themed nights and you receive schedules for each night.
