  • The Western Carolinian FEATURES September 13, 2013 B3 Taste Buds: Mad Batter Bakeshop & Cafe Jamie North cheese sandwich for Staff Writer $7.95. Personally, I have What some might never had a bad meal call a hole-in-the-wall at Mad Batter. I have restaurant located inthe had their black bean middle of campus, the Mad Batter Bakery & Caf is a diverse restau- rant with good food and an amazing staff. Located right on Centennial Drive, Mad Batter is a favorite for faculty and students alike. Started in 1998 by owner Jeanette Evans, the Mad Batter has been going strong since. The name itself is from Alice in Wonder- land, said Evans. We have eclectic food, and it just fits with her story. With hand-painted food on the windows and music playing during hours of operation, Mad Batter welcomes every- one to their door, and I do mean they welcome you. The staff has al- ways been very welcom- ing, treating everyone like family. The atmosphere is alive on the inside. Booths line the wall, a row of tables fill the floor, and one may even take a seat at the win- dow to watch campus pass by. Tarps line the ceiling and walls, and the music and lights help build the atmo- sphere. Owner Evans said after traveling the Mediterranean in the mid-90s she wanted to bring a bit of that here, which one can see in the restaurant. The menu ranges from breakfast all day to homemade burgers to pizza by the slice and everything is in the $6-9 range. They make sure you get your moneys worth. The burgers are massive and come with a side. Even the pizza slices are on the large size. The ingredients are mostly organic and lo- cal; the shop has its own garden where they grow ingredients. Currently, the garden is producing kale and peppers and has grown pumpkins in the past, which allows the restaurant a special menu every month. This months special menu includes a gorgonzola kale salad for $8.25; brie, apple & bacon sandwich for $8.55; green basil curry with avocado for $8.50; and a philly burger, goat cheese and bacon burger and most recently two pizza slices with a side of soup. I ate one slice of Mediter- ranean and one slice of cheese, and the soup was creamy tomato herb par- mesan soup, or simply tomato soup. Everything has such a rich flavor and just tastes amazing. The shop recently went through some renovation as well. Prior to the passing of the alcohol referendum, the shop was more a bakery and coffee shop. With the remodel, and the ability to now serve alcohol, the business model had to change. They opened up the floor for more seating and obtained pizza ovens. Mad Batter also sports a hidden feature of some sorts, a patio in the rear of the shop, which pro- vides more seating and escape from the rush of life. A small garden and fountain provide seren- ity as you enjoy your food. Most of the recipes originated from Evans, but now there are more of collaborations with her awesome staff. The food also has a Mediter- ranean feel to it, to fit with the atmosphere. Mad Batter also host events occasionally. Ev- ans called them dinner theaters. The shop was als6 voted and won 2nd place in Best of Western North Carolina Cullowhee and Sylva for best place with sweets and desserts. With their atmo- sphere and good food, it shouldnt come as a surprise that you can always find students, faculty and members of the community at Mad Batter. Open Monday - Fri- day 7:30 a.m. 8 p.m. and 10 a.m. 2 p.m, on Saturdays and Sundays, anyone should take the time to go enjoy a fantastic meal provided by a wonderful group of people. Mad Batter is located at 568 Centennial Drive in Cullowhee. For more information, check out their Facebook page or call 828-293-3096.
