  • iN The Western Carolinian Allison Adkins Staff Writer Ryan Michaud Sports Editor Josh Turner Staff Writer On September 3, Chancellor David Belcher made a historic an- nouncement, declaring that Western Carolina Universitys enrollment . for the fall 2013 semester equaled 10,106 students for the first time in the universitys history. The retention rate, the graduate student popula- tion and the undergradu- ate student populations numbers have all in- creased. This growth from the University, which has been escalating espe- cially in recent years, has affected WCUs Athletic Department. There are several ways that the Athletic Department has benefited from the growth of the entire Uni- versity such as, in fund- ing, game attendance and recruiting. The most recordable and stable increase due to the higher enrollment is funding to the Athletic Department. WCUs Athletic Direc- tor Randy Eaton said, Obviously as full-time resident attendance increases, so does the amount athletics receives from student fees. We have seen an increase of roughly six percent over _ the three fiscal years I have been at Western. While a seemingly small percentage, every penny helps as we continue to SPORTS I raise the visibility and competitiveness of our programs. This increase has assisted us in cover- ing the increased cost of scholarships; for as tuition and fees increase for the student body, it also increases for each scholarship we award. It seems reasonable to predict that the more stu- dents that are on campus, the higher the attendance at athletic events. Over the past few years, WCU has seen a steady growth in the footballs atten- dance. This is very difficult to determine. However, given the increase in enrollment, we do antici- pate increases in atten- dance for the upcoming academic year, said Eaton. Some students disagree with Eaton. Many stu- dents and faculty believe increase in game atten- dance will only occur if team starts winning. The football team has not had a winning season since 2005 and has gone an abysmal 10-48 the past Six seasons. Eaton and second year head football coach Mark Speir are looking to make necessary adjustments to improve the record. Since Speir and Eaton joined the staff, the team has played big-name schools such as Marshall, Alabama, Virginia Tech and is scheduled to play Auburn later on in the season. Speir stated he is not necessarily a fan of money games but realizes itis necessary to build a young team. Playing money games has helped in the recruit- ing process, as well as the addition of former NFL Super Bowl cham- pion David Patten to the coaching staff. Recruiting has be- come easier due to the increased funding and attendance to games. Funding has allowed more scholarships to be offered, allowing West- ern Carolina to have more scholarship student athletes, attracting better players. Eaton said, Some of our coaches have shared a sense of WCU becoming a go-to school, thereby making it easier to re- cruit. Some have speculated that the amount of money and funding that has gone into the Athletic Department has been a waste. A senior at WCU, who wishes to remain anony- mous, stated, I love that that the school is grow- ing, but if more money is going into the sports program then they need to start winning, which is something they havent been doing. Its frustrat- ing. Some would disagree; believing that growth in the University will improve the sports. Quinn Cooper, a sopho- more majoring in busi- ness management said, The good part about the increase in enrollment to the athletic department is that with the money be- ing increased we will get better facilities, which in- creases Westerns ability to recruit good players.
