Last year the line looked slug- gish, and couldnt open any running lanes for our backs. They also did a poor job protecting the QB. Clady is a perfect fit for the Panthers, a big, athletic mauler who would excel in a zone-blocking scheme Offseason departures Kris Jenkins and Kendal Moorhead left the Panthers with a lack of depth at Defensive line. Replacing these two is amust, and a dominate linemen that can play both positions makes sense. 3a) Matt Forte RB | Tulane NFL running backs work in tandems. The panthers have a prom- ising young back in Deangelo Wil- liams, and a power-runner like Forte would compliment Williamss quick, outside style. Forte ran for over 2,000 yards last season. 3b) Tom Zbikowski S, Notre Dame over the cone send letters requesting legitimate starter at safe- ty, but he needs help on the weak side and in run coverage. Zbikowski is a mean, hard-hitting safety who could contribute im- mediately on special teams and start at free safety if Terrence Holt flops. By Amanda Talbot _ Staff Writer Sixth Annual Literary Fes- tival hosted at WCU. CULLOWHEEWCU _ stu- . dents came to listen to visiting authors as they read thrilling, heart-warming and inspiring excerpts from their great- est works at the Sixth Annual Spring Literary Festival from April 7-10, 2008. Mary Adams, festival director and associate professor of English, said that it was a collaborated effort to get the authors to WCUs literary festival. Some authors were recom- mended by the state poet laureate Kay Byer, and some were friends of the fac- ulty, Adams said. Pat Conroys niece goes fle, so we were able to get him to come. Joel Marchesoni, Jen- ni Giles, Sarah Hipp, Kristi Whitehead and myself found- ed the WCU Green Party, formally the WCU Campus Greens, in spring of 2007. We sprang from all of ours desire to have another political party available on campus. _ Our coming out was the Wellness Fair that semester where we worked on informing folks about the Green Party and how it is working on better health for all of us; petition- ing for ballot access. We had our anni- versary this year by participating in the Wellness Fair again. Our first goal was to reclaim the Woodland, which is our Historic, out- door amphitheater between Moore and Madison, for all of us to be able to use. It is across from the Old Student Union Chris Harris is a 4) Marcus Harrison DT, Arkansas - to be visiting authors at WCUs liter- ary festival, but only a few are selected based on the that years theme. Guest authors at WCUs Sixth Annual Literary Festival included novelists Lee Smith, Ron Rash, Dago- berto Gilb, Pat Conroy, Russel Banks, Gloria Vando; poets Thomas Lux, Jo- seph Bathanti, Sarah Lindsay, Carolyn Beard-Whitlow; and off- Broadway a ac- tress Barbara Bates Smith. Lindsay Godwin, a junior at WCU, said that she has attended every literary festival since she has been at Western. Godwin was present at Lee Smiths introduction to her novel, On Agate Hill, and the performance of the novel by Barbara Bates Smith and Jeff Sebens in the Coulter Auditorium on . April 7" at 7:30 p.m. Tve read a lot of Lee Smiths works and Ive enjoyed her writing, Godwin said. During the introduction to her book On Agate Hill, Lee Smith told the audience why she started wie and was the old version of the UC Lawn before the building of the Hinds UC. The Woodland was where everything happened from pep-rallies to concerts, Maydays festivals and ceremonies. Now it sits without even a sign to point it out, nor any denotation on the cam- pus map. How sad this is! While the UC lawn is currently being invaded by construction (and therefore not as user friendly), the Woodland sits silently, pa- tiently waiting for someone to present a Again add- ing depth along the D-line. Se, ye 5) Owen Schmitt, FB West Virginia loved to read and write, Smith said. I started to write because I couldnt stand to see my favorite books to end. Godwin not only enjoys attend- ing the literary festival events, but also thinks it is a great thing for the cam- pus. . It gets the community in- volved, Godwin said. It incorporates authors that students have read and the students actually get to see the authors. According to Adams, the liter- ary festival has been at WCU since the 1970s. She said that the literary festival was originally called Visiting Writ- ers Series, which brought individual authors to WCU separately. Later, the dean of the Honors College suggested changing the series into a festival to bring the visiting authors to WCU at one collected time. The literary festival has been at WCU for six years, and will hopefully continue for the next mes on PB. bo Greenband Members coming together to bake for a fundraiser.
