  • Page 15 Western Carolinian REVIEWS February 28, 2007 God-des By: Carolyn Ellison Staff Writer A passionate voice of a strong woman vibrated off the walls as I head- ed up the stairs to the Illusions room, and when I got there I saw two women on stage, emitting this wave of sincer- Photo credit: www.witafestval.com ity and fervency over the dancing au- dience. God-des and She are two fine female ladies whose paths first crossed, -in Madison, Wisconsin. These two have skillfully collaborated beautiful harmonies, fierce soul, and words that bite, into something you have probably never heard before. It may have been cold outside that night, but inside, the Illusions room was warm and exploding with energy, the duo demanding that the audience dance. Both artists are enor- mously talented and have a magnetic essence about them. Their music Pos- sesses elements of political awareness, sociological prejudices, and of course the perks and agonies that come with being in a relationship with someone- regardless of your sexual orientation. God-des is the main emcee, emotion- ally and diplomatically charged words dripped and splashed from her mouth while you could see the verve alive in her eyes. She can sing like a champion, her clear voice and its soulful charac- teristics intertwined impressively with God-dess potent rhymes. God-des and She have influenced and inspired girls all over the United States; addressing the issues, stigmas, and intolerable laws that come attached to the word gay, that every one else is too afraid to talk and She about. In their music, there is a strong sense of standing up for oneself, in all its forms, so naturally their fan base includes people from all walks of life. God-des and She both reside in New York City, when they are not tour- ing of course. You may have seen them of the season finale of the L-Word, a tele- vision drama_ series on Showtime: They have also recently re- leased a music video on MTVs. channel, LOGO, called Love you Better. Be sure to log on to their web- site www.god-des. com/, and check out their new video. When = God- des and She were asked the question, What is your idea of comfort? two smiles crept across each of their faces. Being with my family, my family is really cool. Oh, and my pil- low! She said. Apparently She has an attachment to a certain pillow, it even goes on tour with her. She told me how on one occasion, her pillow was once accidentally left behind; a special trip out of the way was made to retrieve it. God-des then looked up from the floor, after intently mulling the question over and said, Feeling like I can be my self, inside and outside of my house. Some of God-dess other ideas of comfort were being with her family and being, a financially stress 1 free. ce a Throughout the. entire show, au ther when God-des would deliver a line that was just so right it stung, or when She would scrunch her eyes closed and let the microphone have it; I found my self stepping back and truly realizing that these girls are onto something, and it is something all their own. God-des and She are endowed with clever humor, sharp insights, and they are not afraid to ask hard questions and give hard an- swers. All of this serves as a vehicle to get their message across to whom? To you! So listen up, and smarten up. eae r Editor in- Chief Amanda Peralta | : | Sport Editor a load Gerben 2 Copy Editor Katie Rath Design Editor Sarah Bonner Staff Writers Ashley Pittman Zach McKeown Rachel Mitchell Ryan Sarda Carolyn Ellison Amanda Talbot Jason Eckard Brad Semma Truly Lucman Jason Lineberger Contrib. The Whigs music breathes with summer. By: Jason W. Eckard Music Reviewer Athens, Georgia based band The Whigs new album Mission Control like an old shack house you see on the de of the road pretty much anywhere in the south. Its a worn place thats en a lot of years and inhabitants, dif- ferent vibes and different stories. Right ow, the inhabitants are The Whigs and ere music is a summertime rainstorm eating down upon a roof. Strange analogies; yes but get e album and listen, youll agree. To nly be fresh out of college, these guys ave a sound as vintage and spiritual as some of southern rocks greatest stars. Its music that breathes with front orch whisky vibes and family gather- gs, but it isnt typical southern rock all. The Whigs incorporate elements of dance rock, indie and just straight up bleting guitars. _ The album begins with Like a Vibration an upbeat dance num- ber, which off the bat shows what The Whigs are all about. Jangled down stroked guitars, smooth bass and lead singer Parker Gisperts pure voice. The album revs up with Right Hand on My Heart coming in with a straight up John Bonham beat and descends into beer drenched tornado which begs of you to raise your glasses and ends with asking you to take a mo- ment of silence. Sleep Sunshine as the name suggests is a very dream-like song. A mellow number with excellent slide guitar that whips in and out of the back- ground, the feeling of a full moon on an open highway is what comes out of this number. As the song progresses its very clear something is chasing us. Fill in the blank with whats chasing you. Its defiantly a very different sound from the rest of the songs on the album and I personally hope its a sound The Whigs choose to further expand upon. The Whigs es Mission Control 1,000 Wives seems as if it was ripped from a jam session in the middle of Neil Youngs Cortez the Killer. In fact the entire song seems to reflect a very Youngian approach. Hot Bed is the king of bar hopper songs totally meant to get the already drunk crowd. Its a song that shows The Whigs other side of the. coin. If theyre not creating atmospheric clouds their making southern takes on the Springsteen sound. When summer finally hits and the weather changes to something more desirable do yourself a favor and feel free to blast Mission Control from your car. Its meant just for that, its an al- bum meant for reflection, for rocking, for drinking. The Whigs make no bones | about there purpose Verse-Chorus- , Verse fits the bill for there music but this shouldnt be seen as a hindrance or anything less. Its within this formula that The Whigs makes some absolutely great music, for anytime of the year. Frat guys, the lonely, the loved, the old and the young, The Whigs are a band that everyone in America should listen to. @
