The National Pan-Hellenic council, incorporated (NPHC) is composed of six Greek letter organi- zations; Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority incorporated, Alpha Phi Alpha frater- nity incorporated, Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity incorporated, Delta Sigma Theta sorority incorporated, Zeta Phi Beta sorority incorporated and Phi Beta Sigma fraternity incorporated. These multicultural organiza- tions are based on the same values and standards that the. other Greek Life organizations on campus adver- tise. Members of NPHC devote time for council meetings with the goal of setting examples on and off campus. Currently Alpha Phi Alpha is the only NPHC organization located on campus. 1G are co glad t to ne Sv ilogi here in the s Village OHHP IR oe $3) winder said, Vice President of. Phi Alpha fraternity incorporated. che definitely helps us stay organized and we have a place where we can meet to discuss business in a professional matter. ; Last year Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity incorporated, Delta Sigma Theta sorority incorporated, Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity incorporated and Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority incor- porated lived in the Greek Village on campus but due to decreasing mem- bers were forced to leave. We dont feel uncomfortable at all being the only NPHC organiza- tion in the Village, Fullerwinder said. We get along with all of the organi- zations on campus and collaborate with them to strengthen our organiza- tion. We dont see it as a black-white thing, we are all Greek and we enjoy working with CPC and IFC. Much effort by the school has been made in bringing Greeks to- gether. Western holds Greek Advance once a year, a program designed to educate Greeks on unity and encour- age councils in working together. It is a great idea to have programs about Greek unity but in the end its all about the individual Fullerwinder said. We would like to see other organizations participate in the programs we sponsor on campus. We put a lot of our time towards pro- grams and events around campus and its awesome ie see fellow Greeks supporting us. Not having a house on cam- pus has made it somewhat difficult for Delta Sigma Theta. The biggest problem we face is not having a place for storage; I mostly keep everything under my bed, Nan- cy Madenyika said, President of Delta Sigma Theta. We do avidly participate and plan programs around campus and cont. on pg..7 Greeks Strensthened After IFC Recruitment Kappa Sigma Fraternity and Sigma Al- pha Epsilon Fraternity gain new mem- bers after last weeks recruitment. By: Ashely Watts staff writer Events were held on and off campus last week for males interested in Greek Life. The events were held to inform potential new members about their specific organizations as well as getting to know the brothers. The most important RUSH event for us is the invite only night, Andrew Daniel said, a member of SAE. This year we were able to stay in a nice cabin in Cashiers, NC. Everything was very well planned and it gave us a chance to really get to know the new guys. The invite only night is for the guys who are really serious about being a part of our organization and want a chance to get involved, Daniel said. For Kappa Sigma all the events are equally important. The basketball game on Monday night was the coolest event for the brothers, Travis Boyer said, a member of Kappa Sigma. We were able to hang out with the guys in a laid back setting, we just wanted to let the new guys see what we were all about. ~ We advertise our organiza- tion as a diverse group of guys who get involved around the community and M ARC H aie have fun doing it, Steven Held said, an older member of Kappa Sigma. We see if these guys have the commitment for this awesome opportunity. We look at basic morals of everyone coming through recruitment and decide which guys would have the best fit with our organization. The brothers of SAE are most proud of their academic standing at Western Carolina. This, will. be the fourth semester in a row that our organization will have the highest G.P.A. in IFC, Daniel said. We are most proud about our commit- ment to school and we try to showcase that to the new members coming in said Daniel, SAE. We are also very serious about Intramurals here at West- ern, and are currently doing very well in points and plan on letting our new members experience the fun that we have in Sigma Alpha Epsilon. All Greek organizations have been effected by the decreasing num- ber of interested students at Western Carolina and have been looking for so- lutions. Its all about breaking down the ste- reotypes that are associated with Greek Life here on campus, Daniel said. We worked our butts off this recruitment to create more of an interest on cam- pus and it shows. We got 15 great new members that are fired up about being a part of Greek Life and hopefully we can lead by example to promote Greek Life as a whole. Some feel it is more of a Uni- versity Issue when it comes to appro- priate advertisement of Greek Life. It is really hard to get your name out there sometimes, Boyer said, Kappa Sigma member. This school doesnt make Greek Life a top priority and it makes it stressful on each organization. We do the best we can to get the most out of recruitment. Kappa Sigma is trying to make their family grow. They encourage that many students come and join their organiza- tion. This has been one of the most exciting times in my life, Andrew Bishop said, a new member of Kappa Sigma. It was absolutely a blast com- ing to all the RUSH events and meeting the brothers of Kappa Sigma. I encour- age anyone who has the slightest in- terest in becoming Greek to get more information. Many are skeptic coming through recruitment, but I would tell them to try it anyway, you never know what you could be missing out on. IFC is continuing to recruit new members everyday. It isnt too late to find out how you could be a part of this Special community. If you have any questions you can stop by the Greek Life office located on the third floor of the U.C. Fraternities on campus invite anyone interested to find out more and see where you best belong.
