Letter to the Editor By:Greg Adkison Commenting on: David Stainback's recycling article I applaud David Stainbacks recent article about recycling at WCU. Sadly, he is probably correct that recycling is linked to conve- nience for many people. I wish his ar- ticle had focused more on this aspect of the problem. Yes, the university should expand its recycling program by placing many more bins around campus and by demanding that Fa- cilities Management staff properly handle all recyclables from the time the materials are hand-collected from the bins until the time they are depos- ited at the CMD. However, I seriously doubt that such effort will solve the problem if Mr. Stainbacks sample of students is representative. People who *care* about the financial, environmental, and aesthetic benefits of recycling will recycle despite inconvenience. Davids data clearly show that 88% of the students he surveyed don't care enough to be bothered. That means most of the 97% who said WCU should set an example are hypocrites and apparently don't understand that *they* are part of the WCU communi- ty that they say should set an example. Similarly, most of the 90% who think WCU's recycling program is inade- quate and ineffective fail to realize that they are themselves largely to blame -- they don't use the program! How can anyone take seriously the 87% who said they would recycle if doing so was more convenient? Does anyone really believe those who say they recycle at home but not here? A person who cares will act, regardless of inconvenience. Indifference? Laziness? Ignorance? In- ability to appreciate details? Just today one of my students in Environmental Biology--an overall good guy--tossed a juice bottle into a trash can as we were leaving a room in McKee. I pulled the bottle out along with a second plastic bottle. The student said with a tinge of embarrassment that he would recycle, but there were no places on campus to deposit recyclables. He and I chatted about this and music for a minute or so as we made our way to a recycling bin no more than 10 steps from the class- room door.
