GP Perry ey = 2 iter ewrwwevewe eV CY __ ON ned Nf Lady Catamount golf starts the spring with a 12 place finish By Zachary Colburn * WCnewsmagazine The Lady Catamount golf team started off the spring season with a 12" place finish out of 20 teams at the Lady Cougar Invitational at the Azalea City Golf course, hosted by the University of South Alabama in Mobile, Alabama. Middie Tennessee State won the invitational with a 15 over par performance, 14 strokes ahead of 2" place Jacksonville State. Western finished the day 47 over par, 4 strokes behind the 11" place UAB Dragons (University of Alabama at Birmingham). Western tied with Southern Mississippi and Samford University in 12" place. Junior Malin Fryk finished 2" overall with an even par performance. Senior Bianca Melone and Freshman Elin Mickelsson tied for 637 with a performance of 15 over par. Junior Kandy Carland was two strokes behind with a 17 over par performance, tying for 76" place. Small Spring Classic, the Western Carolina mens golf team slipped on the second day and turned in a score of 312. The second day score would be enough to drop the Cats from sixth place down to a seventh place tie with High Point. After leading the first day with a 69, junior Matt Cook struggled mightily on the second day and shot an 80. All plays satamounts struggled on the second day as _ ing [WOU SPORTS Ed festernCarolinian 5 Cook leads the way as Mens Golf team fini invitational By Andy Gambill WCnewsmagazi The Mens Golf team, led by junior Matt Cook, finished 6" out of 15 teams at the Argonaut Invitational in Pensacola, Florida, on February 27. Western shot a team total of 881, over three days, to finish 17 strokes behind the winning team, Virginia Commonwealth. VCU shot 864 and finished at even par for the course. Old Dominion finished two strokes behind in second place, while Wichita State was_ four strokes behind in_ third place. The University of West Florida and Belmont University finished in fourth and fifth place. Cook, a favorite to be one of the top golfers in the country, finished with a_ final score of 218. The score was good for 2-over par Pe od and 16" place overall. WU) s 6" at Argonaut best scores around his worst day. Cook opened the tournament with a 73, but shot a 75 on the second day. He rebounded on the final day and shot a 70, the 18"-best final round score in school history. Senior Tripp Morrow also had a strong showing as he finished in 20 place. Morrow shot a 76 in the opening round, but bounced back with a 71a finish 4-over par. Transfer Andres C 33" as he shot 7-over par. Fr Chapin rounded out as he shot 15-over par to finish tied for vith a 72 but struggled over ys by shooting 80 and 79. Campos. of Virginia Cook sandwiched his Mens Golf team slips in final day of Lonnie D. Small Spring with a 585 two-day score. The result should come as no big surprise considering the Classic was held at Keith Hills Country Club in Buies Creek, NCthe home of Campbell University. Even with the familiarity of playing the course, Campbell still managed to only shoot a 9-over par for the tourney. Also of interest, Appalachian State brought up the rear of the Classic as they shot a 624 overall to finish 13" out of 15 teams, and 12 strokes behind the Catamounts. Josh Meador of Radford would win the in a tie for 44". The final Catamount _ individual title as he shot a 140. Meador posted as freshman Ricky Stout. Stout turned a 72 on day one, before bouncing back and worst first-day WCU score with an 83, posting a very impressive 68 second day score. t showed the most second-day Catamount The four-under score of 140 was a tournament- improvement with a 79. Stout would finish tied record and was good enough to win by three _ for 71% with a 162. Campbell University won the tournament strokes over second place.
