That statement was a big lead early in the game and holding off a late charge from Georgia Tech to go on to the 10-7 victory over Georgia Tech in front of 991 fans at Russ Chandler Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia. The win moves Western to 5-and-2 on the season, while the Yellow Jackets fall to 6-and-5. Western started the offense early as Jonathan Greene knocked a solo home run over the center field fence to take a 1-0 lead after 1 inning. The Catamounts would add 4 more in the top of the 2" as Blake Murphy sent a shot down the 3 base line and legged out his 1* triple of the year. Freshman Nick Liles would reach on an error to score Murphy. John Ingram drove in Liles with an RBI double, and was driven in by a double from Barrett Shaft, Stranded runners doom Catamounts By Zachary Colburn * WCnewsmagazine Stranding a combined 29 base runners in two games is not a recipe for success, but the Catamounts did manage a 1-1 record over that span. Over this span, Western would move to 7-and-5 on the season. Western Carolina traveled to Tennessee to take on an old Southern Conference foe, East Tennessee State and would leave the Volunteer state with a 7-4 victory in front of 113 fans at Cardinal Park in Johnson City, Tennessee. The Buccaneers dropped to 9-and-5 on the season. Western held off an East Tennessee State attack in the 1 inning as a lead-off double by C.J. Lee puta runner in scoring position with just one out. But starter Chris Masters would pick off Lee at 2"? , and then struck out Anthony Russell to prevent any other damage. Western had its chance in the bottom of the 1* loading the bases but could not push anything across the board. Three innings later, Western would break the scoreless tie as they loaded the bases and two runners, Brent Greer and Nick Liles would score on an RBI single by Barrett Shaft to take a 2-0 lead. The next inning the Cze:amounts added 2 more runs to extend the lead to 4. In the bottom of the inning, the Buccaneers finally got on the scoreboard on an RBI single by Troy Mendez and trim the lead to 4-1. John Ingram would do some damage of his own in 6" as he ripped a 2-run double to left field scoring Jonathan Greene and Blake Murphy to make it a 6-1 game. Ingram added who would score on a Donnie Wilson single to gain the 5-0 lead after 2 innings. Murphy would lead off the 3' inning with another hit to left field. This time it was only a single, and advanced to 2" on a fielders choice by Liles and would take 3 on a throwing error. Murphy scored on T.C. Roberson High School standout Kenny Smith, driving in his team-leading 12" RBI. get the next 2 batters out before giving up a double to Ingram and a single to Liles, Ingram _ would score on the single. The Yellow Jackets _ would get on the scoreboard in the bottom of the 5" courtesy of 3 consecutive singles given up by Catamount starter Tyler Johnson, but that would be all that he would give up. With neithe team scoring in the 6" or 7" inning, Wilso would stop the drought with his 2 RBI single of _ a triple to centerfield in the 7" and scored o a Liles single for the 7-1 lead. Mendez woul the 7" ona single to right field. East Tennesse State added 2 more runs in the bottom of the 9t but could not muster any more runs as Wester took the game, 7-4. the game, driving in Ingram from 3" for the 10-1 lead. Georgia Tech would show that they still got some fight in them by capitalizing on 4 hits, 3 walks and a Western error by pushing across 6 runs in the bottom of 8" but that would be as - close as they would get as Catamount closer another fielders choice, this one from former Greg Holland came in with 1 out in the 8" to stop the bleeding and pitched a scoreless 9" to preserve the upset, 10-7. Murphy would lead off the 5 inning with a solo homer for the 8-0 lead. Georgia Tech would of hitting for the cycle going 3-for-5. Greenes 3-for-3 performance was good for extending his The Catamounts registered 4 hitters with 3 hits apiece, Murphy fell just a double shy hitting streak to 20 games. Wilson and Ingram would round out the 3-hit performances by going 3-for-5 and 3-for-4 respectively. Johnson got the win, going 4 2/3 innings, giving up just a single run on 7 hits while striking out 7. Chris Masters came in afterwards, not giving up a hit Ore a run over 2 1/3 na 7 Ingram led the Catamounts in biting op 7 going 4-for-5 on the game with 2 RBI's falling St just short of hitting for the cycle by a home _ the run. Three other Western batters had multi-hit i games as Liles went 3-for-5. Greer hit his 1% | collegiate double in going 2-for-4 on the day and Shaft rounded out the multi-hitters going 2- _ for-5 with 2 RBIs. Masters picked up his 2" win of the season going 6 innings, allowing 1 runon _ 5 hits, walking 1 batter and striking out 5. Corey - Martin pitched 3 innings, giving up 3 runs on 6 hits, walking 2 batters and striking out 1 batter single, bringing in Smith from 2nd base, who reached base on a double. Western had one last opportunity in the bottom of the 9, with 2 for the save. For the 2"? consecutive day, Western Carolina stranded almost as many runners (1 5) as they had hits (20) in the game. Unfortunately, _ stranded runners, missed chances and giving u 10 runs in an inning would prove to be too muc for the Catamounts to overcome as Western f to the Mercer Bears, 13-10 in front of 106 fans at Hennon Stadium. The win moved Mercer to 11-and-7 on the season. With Western leading 3-1 going in the 4" inning, the fireworks really began as both teams combined for a total of 16 runs in the inning on 14 hits; 10 runs by Mercer and in another runner, and Smith dove in 2 more runners with a 2-out single to trim the deficit to 41-9. The Bears would up the. lead to 4 in the 6h on a 2-run home run. More | runs would have been scored but catcher Blake. Murphy threw out a pair of base runners to prevent anymore _ damage. Trailing 13-9 going into the 8" inning, Western would go to their bench for offense as pinch hitter Andy John reached base on an RBI runners on base and only 1 out. Mercer closer Cory Gearrin struck out the next 2 batters before Wilson, but got out t of the jam nl getting a fly- out to end the gene, 13- 10. oe oge game, going 2-for-4. Syer Johnson got gged for his 2" loss of the season, only going innings, giving 5 runs on Ly ne. walking 2 and ele out 2. .
