ee The future of food at Western Carolina University By Russell Conover * WCnewsmagazine Within the next several years, dining services at Western Carolina University will undergo some rather dramatic changes. These changes are intended to improve the campus dining experience for students, faculty, staff, and visitors. Michelle Crowe, the Director of Dining Services at WCU, recently spoke with the WC about the future of food on the WCU campus. A new dining facility is scheduled to replace Dodson and Brown, said Crowe. Helder residence hall will be torn down, and the new dining facility will be located there. The residence hall to replace Helder will go behind where Helder is now. These changes promise to improve both the dining services and the living facilities on the campus of WCU. The new dining facility will combine the current layouts of Dodson and Brown. The new dining facility will include both retail and One Price Dining locations, said Crowe. Retail locations on the first floor will include Starbucks, Panda Express, Grill Works, Zoca (a new Mexican concept), and Freshens Smoothies and Ice Cream. The upper level of the new dining facility will be One Price Dining or All You Care to Eat, said Crowe. This modification to campus dining will result in a more convenient location for all-you-can-eat dining, compared to the current location of Brown Cafeteria. The food in the new dining facility will be different than the current options in Dodson and Brown, and the eating environment may also undergo a change. Outdoor seating may be possible at the new facility, said Crowe. If this aspect of the dining facilities project is approved, the WCU community would be able to enjoy some fresh air while munching on their favorite campus meals. Crowe went on to explain the future of existing dining facilities on campus. In the fall of 2007, Brown will become a retail location, said Crowe. The U.C. food court will remain unchanged in terms of location and food options Are you looking to go on a health kick? Are you afraid that all the food on campus is too fattening, overloaded with too many calories? Do you think that there is nothing remotely healthy to eat on Westerns campus? Those are logical questions which deserve some answers. Chick-Fil-Ais perhaps the most fattening place to eat on campus because virtually everything is fried. However, while Chick-Fil-A has some foods with high numbers of fat and calories, they also have some alternatives for students to eat and stay healthy. lf youre a fan of the chicken filet sandwich offered at Chick-Fil-A, be aware of the high amount of calories in the sandwich 410 calories. If you add some Polynesian sauce to that sandwich, thats an additional 110 calories you're adding. So that sandwich you purchase at the UC could be a total of 520 calories that you are indulging. If you add a side of waffle fries as a side item to that sandwich, thats an additional 270 calories. So if you eat at Chick-Fil-A for lunch or dinner, you could be eating a total of 790 calories. lf you're not a fan of salads, instead of ordering the fried chicken filet, a healthier sandwich to order is the chargrilled chicken sandwich. Instead of 410 calories that lie in the fried filet, the chargrilled sandwich has 270 calories which is much healthier. Another healthy alternative to those delicious, but unhealthy, sandwiches at Chick-Fil-A is the chargrilled chicken salad. The char grilled chicken salad has a total of 180 calories. In an eight-pack of nuggets at Chick-Fil-A, there's a total of 260 calories with 12 grams of fat. Meanwhile, the 12 pack has 390 calories and 18 grams of fat. However, the healthiest things to eat at Chick-Fil-A are their salads. Einstein Brothers Bagels is in its first year of existence here at WCU. However, a vast majority of items on the menu are very unhealthy. Ordering the tasty turkey on an Asiago Bagel has 600 calories and 160 calories from fat. The Grilled Italian Chicken Panini has 690 calories. Looking at the sandwiches, within. As a result, the general locations of dining on campus will remain the same, although the food available in each will undergo some changes in the effort to better satisfy the WCU community. Crowe also stated the importance of keeping food options fresh on campus. Each semester or year, Dining Services attempts to add new menu items, locations, or concepts. In the past four years, Dining Services has added sushi, two Java City locations, three C-stores (or convenience stores), smoothies in the U.C., Einsteins bagels, and Dippin Dots ice cream, said Crowe. Along with plans for the new dining facility, these locations promise to continue offering a satisfying variety of food on campus. According to Crowe, WCU has several reasons for making changes to its dining facilities. The planners are looking into the larger needs of WCU and are planning for the future, she said. The dining facilities are changing because of student use. More students are in the center of campus to live and do things. In addition, dining services should change every year to stay current and keep from getting stale, Crowe continued. We also listen to what students say, and we try to respond to them. Food consultants planned the new dining facility with some input from students, she added. So, when will this ambitious project be completed? The replacement for Helder Hall, and the new dining hall, will be completed for the fall semester of 2008, said Crowe. The replacement for Leatherwood Hall will happen afterwards. Therefore, WCU is just a few years away from some exciting developments in the fields of dining and housing. The WC thanks Michelle Crowe for providing the information for this article, and it looks forward to seeing the future dining options at Western Carolina University. they dont seem too bad for you. However, Chick-Fil-A for lunch, and Einstein Brothers for dinner could combine to nearly 1300 calories. Dont sweat my friends, because despite having some items that are over 600 calories, Einstein Brothers also has some healthy alternatives that can make for some healthy and fine dining. The Build Your Own Sandwiches are the safest to get because you can determine the amount of calories that go onto your sandwich. Another safe item to order at Einstein Brothers is the chicken noodle soup. Ordering chicken noodle soup instead of a sandwich could dock those calories a ton. The total amount of calories in a small cup of Chicken Noodle soup is 160. Now available in the University Center, as well as in Cyber Caf are a wide range of smoothies from Freshens Smoothie Company. A majority of smoothies such as the Mystic Mango and the Strawberry Squeeze are packed with about 330 calories. However, the menu offers a group of low-cal smoothies available for students to enjoy. The Strawberry Oasis has a total of 89 calories, | and the peach passion has 152 total calories. Another place where students can go to ensure they are getting the proper nutrition is in Brown Cafeteria. The all-you-can-eat cafeteria offers a salad bar, fruit bar, and they also give students a different meat to eat every day. The three different C-Stores are also good ways in ensuring proper health for students. Students can pick out items that they can make in their dorm rooms. The C-Stores have Lean Cuisines, which are low cal and low- carb microwavable meals that are healthy for students to enjoy. They also have different soups, pastas, drinks, breads, along with a variety of other items. The { C-Stores are one ticket to help students ensure the healthy lifestyle that they are | looking for. So, the answer is yes there are some healthy eats on the campus of Western Carolina University; you just have to find them. If youre ready to adjust your lifestyle and live a happy and healthy life, it all starts with what you eat. Finding healthy foods on campus will not only make you look better, but they'll make you feel better as well.
