  • FEATURE: RELIGIOUS REVELATIONS This is the time in our lives when we learn who we are and where we want to be later in life. College is the ideal place to explore what Feligion and faith means to you and how you will let it exist in your life. When considering whether religion and faith is something you want incorporated nto your university experience, you should weigh the pros andcons. Looking back on my time here at WCU, I did encounter circumstances that required thought about my faith and values. | have not let it hinder my experiences here, but | have sometimes called upon it for guidance, There are both helpful and harmful issues one can consider about Feligion and faith in college. Having faith can provide a student with Purpose and drive. Also, fellowship with others of the same faith can give Students a sense of belonging, a place where one can relate to others, How many of you have said a litle prayer before a midterm you did not study for? Who knows if this really helped you pull that 8- off instead of a C, but | am convinced it did relieve some anxiety so you could better perform, Before you start to think | am all for religion and faith, let me also present some negative aspects for your consideration. Those who are strongly devoted to a religious sect tend to close their minds to other options, ways of life, and opinions. Itis a time to broaden horizons and learn to accept Western Carolina University features several clubs and organizations affliated with politics, and the three most prominent are the College Republicans, the College Democrats, and the Student Government Association. Religion affects each of these groupswhether in a direct manner through the activities they conduct, or in a more indirect manner through the influence of religion on their members, Amanda Shirk, President of the WCU College Republicans, discussed the topic of religion and politics with the WC. People should follow two religions, rather than just one, says Shirk, so they are not foo biased or focused on one spiritual point of view. Our country was founded on religion, she adds, and as a result, religion is an important part of many people's lives. We {the College Republicans] try not to afflate religion with politics, Continues Shirk, but we have deeply rooted religious beliefs. Ourmembers take Part in several activities related to abortion, and as a whole, we are opposed to the idea of abortion. We also support the idea that people have every right to express their religious beliefs. President of the College Democrats, Max Long, talked to the WC about religion and politics from the point of view of his organization, Some of our members attend religious events on campus, but we do ot overlap our activities with religion, says Long. Instead, we focus on our agenda, our democratic ideals, and political parties on campus. Religion can serve several purposes in society, such as protests against war or abortion, There are different voices among the members of the College Democrats, Long continues, some of whom have strong religious beliefs and some of which do not. We [the College Democrats} are not religious as a recently diversity. Somereligions ell theirfollowersthat ditferencesaredangerousandare tobeavoided. This can cause problems between faith and the college experience. Also, the strict moral codes that come with some religions can limit experiencing college to the full extent. College is a time of leai it also a time to establish your impendence and leam What the real world has to offer you socially fa person of faith feels they can not go to a party for fear of temptation, then this person is limiting the full college experience. No one said that because you are going toaparty youhave todrink. Ifeel that going to Social events in college is a positive thing that can allow youto make new friends, relax, and feelas though you are college student living itup instead of sitting alone in your dorm room every night. Having religion and faith in college can be both helpful and harmful, but | hope that you do not let it limit your college life. If you find having faith works for you, that is great, but do not hesitate to try new things. Choosing to not have a religious foundation here at school is admirable, too, My hope is that regardless of the religious choices you make here at WCU, you will keep an open-mind and always follow your heart in life. whole, but there are religious elements to what we do. We are an inclusive group. Cody Grasty, President of the Student Government Association (or SGA) of Wester Carolina University, recently spoke with the WC about religion and politics as it relates to the SGA Religion is an opinion, says Grasty, because there are no definite standards regarding what is right and wrong. "Expression is 9/10 of the battle, he believes, because everyone should be able to comfortably hold his or her beliefs and express them when desired. As a college, says Grasty, WCU is open and accepting to different religions and different religious points of view on campus. SGA has no affiliation with religion, Grasty told the WC. Instead, it Provides an equal opportunity for funding to clubs with (and without) religious affiliations. The goals of SGA are (1) to spread the word about various organizations and WCU, and (2) to engage the students. SGA tries to bring different clubs together for social reasons and to solve problems together. The College Republicans, the College Democrats, and the Student Government Association of Westem Carolina University all have something in commontheir members stand up for their religious and political beliefs as individuals and as groups without intentionally disrespecting or insulting other People who may hold different beliefs. Overall, there are some interesting connections between these three organizations and the subject of religion and Politics. newsmagazine
