  • Matt Cook wins SoCon golf championship; WCU comes in ninth By Andy Gambill + wCnewsmagazine Sophomore Matt Cook accomplished what only one other Catamount has ever done in school historyhe won the SoCon mens golf championship. Cook shot a 69 on the final day and ended up with a three-round total of 211 to beat Bryan Jones of Georgia Southem. Cook's accomplishment is the second title for WCU; the first was Kelly Leonhardt who won in 1987. The championships played at The Links at Stono Ferry showcased the Murphy, NC native's skills as he shot 70, 72, and then finished with the 69. Cook also grabbed another piece of history as he became the first SoCon Mens Golfer of the year at Western Carolina and was named first team All-SoCon. The Catamount golf team did not fair quite as well as Cook, though, as they finished only 9 overall. Wester shot a 903, the fourth- best SoCon championship score in school history. The Catamounts. finished 36 strokes behind SoCon champion Georgia Southem. Western did demolish 10 and last place overall App State by 30 strokes to stick ito the rival Mountaineers. Cook's three-day total tied for the best WCU score ever at a SoCon championship with 2002 fourth-place finisher Greg Lewis. Westems head men's golf coach Gorham Bradley put it best when he said, Today, Matt showed what a great champion he is. He went out and did what he needed to do to win, while making it look easy. That is what great players do. Cook displayed his greatness all year as he finished in the top five of all five WCU spring events and averaged 71.52 strokes a round. The 71.52 led the league and destroyed the WCU single-season record for scoring. In all 10 events of the year, Cook finished in the top 10 eight times and in the top five seven times. Cook won three events en route to two SoCon Golfer of the Month awards, two SoCon Golfer of the Week awards, and finally the SoCon Golfer of the Year award. Western's program will no doubt benefit from Cook's excellent performance. The program is already showing marked improvement as all five of Western's golfers improved upon their second-day scores in the final round of the Championships. Tripp Morrow improved by six strokes to finish and tied for 30 with a 228. Meanwhile, seniors Matt Fiueckiger, Keith Tyburski, and Blake Wray rounded out the Catamount contingent. Flueckiger improved five strokes to finish 39 with a 233, while Tyburski improved two strokes to finish tied for 42> with a 237. Wray improved one stroke to finish 44" with a 239. Western was beaten out for first by eight-time Division Ill National Champion, Methodist College. Westem lost by only three strokes as they shot @ 626 for the invitational, but the performance by Carland helped make Up a little for the second-place team finish. Carland was tied with Methodist College's Katie Dick at the end of 36 holes with total score of 152. Carland was able to edge Dick in a sudden death playoff as she only needed four strokes on the 18 while Dick bogeyed to finish the hole.
