  • WCnewsmagazine Western sweeps UNCGG to stay in 1* place By Zachary Colburn + Wenewsmagazine Despite very wet conditions and playing on the road, Western Carolina overcame those obstacles and swept the Lady Spartans of UNCG over April 21- 23 weekend at UNCG Softball Stadium in Greensboro, North Carolina. The 3 wins allowed Western to maintain their 1* place spot in the Southern Conference, moving to 35-16 on the year, and 12-2 in the conference. UNCG dropped to 18-33 and 3-12 in the SoCon, Mens Outdoor Soccer Championship By Ryan Fussell + Wenewsmagazine Newsschool metold guard this year for the men's outdoor soccer championship game. Naughty Nasty Norton, the new school team named on basis of their first year as a dorm, proved to be a steady team throughout the playoffs, scoring three goals in each contest. This trend continued into the championship game where sophomore Ryan Pettit led Norton in the contest with their first and last goals, bringing the game to yet another three goal score for the Norton team. Three was the magic number for Naughty Nasty Norton during the entire tournament, but the old guard team of international F.C. had a different magic number. AAs the reigning indoor soccer champion team, International F.C. looked for the five goals in each of their playoff contests. The only difference was that their five goals were the minimum margin of defeat over their opponents, beating their play-in teams by five goals, six goals and in the championship game, five goals yet again. Led by Argentinean exchange student Alejandro Barrientos and by senior striker Paul Aloo, Who both posted at least two goals in each game, International F.C. rolled through the championship game. Aloo posted four goals, while Barrientos notched two in the final contest. Hersci of Great Britain completed the team's eight goal total in the final with a hat trick of his own. (Old guard held off new schoo! in both indoor and outdoor for the second year ina row, but with graduations, it looks to be interesting on whether they will remain on top next year, but only time wil tel Coed Softball Championship By Ryan Fussell * WCnewsmagazine Another great softball turnout for spring coed softball was just what was needed to break up the dredge of years end woes, and if fall's turnout was any indicator, it looked as though softball would not only have good numbers, but be a great success. The regular season was held just before Easter break to set the playoff schedule for everyone's return. As if an All-Star break, the playoff teams retumed primed for action and got to it the next week. There was no predictability in the fields this year. Games that looked to be biow-outs quickly became deadiocks, underdogs would pull a George Mason and go further than expected, and some games, well, were just brutal. In the first play-in game held, Lambda Chi Athletics would put the hammer to the heavy hitters, 22-1. Lambda Chi would progress on forfeit to their third game, where The Hotties proved to be a bit to much in their 12-7 win. On the other end of the bracket, the Gutbusters and the PE Majors would prove to play the exact opposite style of softball. The Gutbusters scored 14 and 20 runs in their first and second games respectively to advance to play the PE Majors, who had won all of their games by a single run. As the Gutbusters played the PE Majors, both teams did their usual style of play. The Gutbusters opened up a six run lead by the second inning, but as usual, the PE Majors slowly starting accumulating runs until they would win by a single run. Team Yahtzee would blow out all their regular season teams, and lok to do the same with their first round game against The Whoos. This pitted Yahtzee against Azdidas, a team that shut out Campus Rock, 10-0. Yahtzee would command a first inning lead of 5-0, but would be subjected to a battery of short-outfield hits. After seven innings, Azdidas would stop Yahtzees run with an 11-5 win. The 10 run games would continue for Azdidas as they would knock off the Hotties (15-5) and the PE Majors (15-13) for the overall championship. The PE Majors had unleashed a barrage of 8 runs in the first two innings, but in normal fashion, Azdidas which catch fire with the short-field hits for the overall championship win. Z5
