  • 34 | WChewsmagazine | Greenes walk-off completes sweep for WCU By Zachary Colburn + Wenewsmagazine Acouple of big-run innings in the first 2. games of the series and a walk- off homer in the final game was all that Western Carolina needed to complete the sweep of Princeton University at Hennon Stadium over the weekend of March 18-19. The wins move them to 9-9 on the season. In game 1 of the series on Saturday afternoon, Princeton grabbed the early 1-0 leadin the 2 inning, but that would not last long. With his first homerun, sophomore Jonathan Greene would tie up the game at 1. Western's first big ing of the series came in the 4 inning, as the Catamounts sent 10 men to. the plate, getting 4 hits while forcing 3 Tiger errors to take a 6-1 lead. Western would end up taking the lead for good in the 6" inning with 4 more runs for the 10-1 lead and with all 4 runs being unearned, thanks to another Princeton error, 5 hits, including a 2-run triple by sophomore Steven Strausbaugh. Princeton cut the lead to 10-3 in the top of the 7* on a pair of RBI singles but would get no closer than that as 10-3 proved to be the final margins. Sophomore Tyler Sexton got his 4 win of the season for Western, scattering 8 hits over 7 innings, allowing just 1 eared run with no walks and 4 strikeouts. Senior Jeremy Ellenburg would come in as a reliever and pitch the final 2 innings, allowing just one batter reach base, courtesy of an error. At bat, Western was led by Strausbaugh and Donnie Wilson, each going 2-for-. All but one of the starters got at least 1 hit in the game, Later that afternoon, it would be Western that would grab the early lead, with Steven Strausbaugh and Blake Murphy leading that charge as Strausbuagh would hit his 9* homer of the season. Then after a Trey McDaniel double, Murphy would hit and RBI triple to right. Princeton would take the lead on 3 runs in the top of the 3 inning. In the home half of that inning, the Catamounts would answer back with 2 runs of their own, thanks to back-to- back singles by Jason Haynes and Barrett Shaff, followed by an RBI double by Strausbaugh and an RBI single by McDaniel. The next inning Shaft would add a 2-run double to put Western up 6-3. The Tigers would cut the lead to 6-5 after tallying 2 runs in the 5* inning. The Catamounts 2% big inning of the day came in the 8" inning with Westem sending 12 batters to the plate, scoring 7 runs on 5 hits and 3 Princeton errors. Jonathan Greene and Wilson provided most of the offense on back-to-back 2-run singles. Princeton's last effort came in the top of the 9" innit uns but it would end on a ground-out to provide the final 13-8 margi Junior Brock Thomburg pitched the first 3.1 innings of the game, allowing hits and 3 runs, while striking out 5 and allowing 1 walk. Senior Brian MecCullen would improve to 1-1 on the season, allowing 3 hits and 2 runs over the next 3.2 innings with 1 walk and 4 strikeouts, Sophomore Greg Holland pitched the 8 inning, striking out the side on the only 3 batters he faced. Trailing by 7 runs in game 3, Western would finally get on the board in the bottom of the 5. Freshman Andy John would reach base despite striking out. Barrett Shaft would walk next, Steven Strausbaugh was hit by a pitch, and Blake Murphy would bring in John thanks to a walk. With the bases stil loaded, Western would get no further as they would fly out to end the inning. In the 7, Western trimmed the lead to 7-4 thanks fo a Shaft single, an RBI double by Strausbaugh followed by an RBI single by Trey McDaniel. Tim Hallam would bring in the 3% run of the inning by taking one for the team, The Catamounts would tie the game at 7-all in the bottom of the 9*. Down to their last out, Grey Gregory would reach on an error, which would eventually lead to the bases being loaded. Shaft would hit a two-run double to right and scoring Hallam and John, but Gregory would be gunned down at the plate for the final out. Trailing 8-7 in the bottom of the 12%, Blake Murphy would bring in Strausbaugh with an RB! double which would set the stage for Jonathan Greene's game-winning homer to centerfield as Wester would walk away with an 10-8 win. Westems closer Greg Holland picked up his 1* win, going the final 4.1. innings, scattering 7 hits, 1 run, 1 walk and a career-high 7 strikeouts. The trio of Tyler Johnson, Bryan Corbett and Brian McCullen would hold the Tigers in check over 3.2 innings, allowing 2 hits and 1 walk in that span. Leading the way offensively for Westem was Barrett Shaft, going 4-for-6, while Strausbaugh had Shits.
