  • Western Carolinian November 4,1993 Page 17 Sports Golf team clubs the others to win invite Courtesy of Sports Information Western Carolina University's men's golf team continued its promising play in the fall portion of its 1993-94 schedule by winning the championship of the WCU- Sapphire Valley Intercollegiate last weekend. The 36-hole tournament was played last Saturday and Sunday on the challenging Sapphire Valley Golf and Coun try Club course in Cashiers. WCU, behind the play of a pair of freshmen, took a 10 stroke lead after the opening 18 holes on Saturday then held off the challengers in Sunday's round to win by seven strokes with a four-man, 36- holes score of 629. Tusculum College of Greeneville, TN, finished second with 636 strokes and was followed by The Citadel (637), Florida A&M (642), Catawba (645), WCU's Gold team (649), South Carolina State and Fayetteville State (654), UNC-Asheville (666), Davidson (680) and VMI (699). Freshmen Jamie Eckard (Claremont, NC) and Jamie Whitley (Rockingham, NC) led WCU's effort. Eckard's 72 on Saturday in rainy, windy and cold conditions was the best round of the tournament. Waters only inductee in '93 Leanne Doerner Sports Editor The late Bob Waters, WCU's former head football coach, was inducted into the WCU Hall of Fame on Saturday. Waters joined 28 others, including former athletes, coaches and administrators, that were inducted in the first three hall of fame ceremonies. Waters led the Cats from 1969-1988. He had more wins than any other WCU coach at 116. His first team finished the season with a 9-1 record and was the school's first ranked football team. Serving as athletics director for 15 years, 1971-1986, he moved Western from the NAIA to the NCAA and into the Southern Conference. Waters helped in bringing the university Ronnie Childress Field, E. J. Whitmire Stadium and theListon B. Ramsey Regional Activity Center. Before coming to WCU, he had five seasons with San Francisco as starting quarterback. He was forced to the sidelines due to a series of injuries in 1964. Waters died May 29,1989, at the age of 50, as a result of Lou Gehrig's Disease. The Hal 1 of Fame Committee's Patron Award was given to Dr. Wallace N. Hyde ■ andE.h Whitmire.
