Shirley Cox as Phaedra and Robert Blackburn as Theseus in a scene from Jean Racine's "Phaedra," to be presented at WCU Wednesday. Racine's'Phaedra'To Be Presented Wednesday The Touring Classics divi sion of American Theatre Productions Inc. will present Jean Racine's great tragedy, "Phaedra" at 8 p. m. Wednesday, March 27, in Hoey Auditorium at Western Carolina University. The dramatic production is being brought to the WCU cam= pus by the University Programs Committee under Taylor L, Huskins, Chairman. All university students will be admitted free. The production will be open to the public at a nominal admission fee. No advance ticket sales are scheduled. The ATP production is based on a new English translation by Robert Lowell. Starring in the play are Shirley Cox, Robert Blackburn, John MasAllan, Nancy Donohue, Audrey Ward, Ralph Nilson, Paula Shaw and David Metcalf. Phaedra is a woman of dark and complex passions, whose tragedy has stirred creative talents from ancient Greek times to the present. Her guilt-ridden love for her stepson, Hippolytus, has been dramatized by Euripides, Seneca, Racine and many others, including the immortal Sarah Bernhardt. This was the divine Sarah's favorite role, and done quite often during her American farewell tour. Last fall, The Theatre of the Living Arts of Philadelphia created quite a furor when they presented the new translation of this Racine play by Lowell, the distinguished poet. It starred Diana Sands as "Phaedra" and the audience reactions to this sparkling version prompted the American Theatre Productions in their selection of this classic for their touring pr oduction. Army Team Visits WCU Next Week Rev. Godwin To Speak On Vietnam Tonight Rev. Colon Godwin, former Baptist chaplain at WCU, will speak Tuesday, March 26, at 8 p.m. in the BSU center. His topic will be "The Current Situation in Vietnam." Since June of last year, Rev. Godwin has been in Vietnam with the State Department's Agency for International Development (AID). The purpose of the Vietnam AID program is to pacify areas secured from the Viet Cong. R-jv. Godwin's work is in the lower MeKong Delta on the southern tip of South Vietnam in the An Xuyan province. His work consists mainly of programming argicultural programs in areas contested with the Viet Cong. These programs include: land reforms, agricultural credit, rice, vegetable, and swine production, marine fisheries, and forestry. He also helps in the administration of these agencies. serving as technical advisor to the Vietnamese. He is responsible to both American and Vietnamese senior officers for coordinating agricultural — psychological warfare and works directly with the GVN to work with the farmers that the Viet Cong are recruiting. Campus Politics Views Elections SEE THURSDAY'S CAROLINIAN Candidates File ForStudentOffices A selection team for Army officer candidates will visit Western Carolina University April 2, 3, 4, 1968, team leader, Lt James Cross announced today. Lt. Cross, from the US Army Recruiting Main Station, Nashville, Tennessee, will interview interested college seniors and graduates at the campus for the officer candidate enlistment option. Under the program, qualified college seniors and graduates enlist in the Army and are guaranteed attendance at one of three officer candidate schools after completing eight weeks of basic and eight weeks of advanced individual training (Pre-OCS). Graduates of OCS are commissioned second lieutenants in the Army. They must agree to serve a minimum of two years as commissioned officers after completing this training. The Army team visiting the local campus is one of many touring selected colleges and universities throughout the nation. The recent action of increasing the size of the armed forces has caused a need for a corresponding increase In the Army's officer corps. Charles Sutton and Tom Roberts have filed for candidates for President of the Student Body, according to an announcement from Roger Euliss, At press time the lone contender for vice-president was Jim Copeland, a student senator. Filing for these offices close today at 5 p.m. Sutton is presently vice- president of the student body and Roberts is past president of Interfraternity Council. Both are juniors. Campaign speeches by the candidates are tentatively set for Thursday night. The Western Carolinian will sponsor a forum Monday, April 1 in the Blue Room of the University Center for candidates. A forum committee will ask questions of the candidates. Student Work Program In Europe Want to see Europe for practically the cost of a postage stamp? Hurry and enter the "Why I Want To Work in Europe" competition sponsored by the International Student Information Service, a non-profit student organization based in Brussels, Belgium, and their American affiliate, International Society for Training and Culture, Here's all you do: Write a one hundred word essay, "Why I Want to Work in Europe for the Summer." Print your name, school and home address legibly on the essay and mail it to: ISIS/ISTC Cultural Review' Board 866 United Nations Plaza New York, New York 10017 Entries must be postmarked no later than April 30, 1968, and will be judged by the ISIS/ ISTC Cultural Review Board. The winner will receive: 1. Free round-trip jet transportation from New York to Brussels, Belgium and 2. A job for the summer of 1968 in the job category and language speaking area of his choice. Entry in the "Why I Want to Work in Europe" competition is open to all members and associate members of ISI/ ISTC. Students above 17 who are not currently members may obtain associate membership in ISIS/ISTC by sending one dollar ($1.00) to ISIS or ETC. In return you will receive associate member status so that you may enter the "Why I Want to Work Abroad" competition. You will also receive free a 34-page illustrated magazine descriving the ISIS/ISTC JOBS ABROAD program. All students are invited to attend and meet the candidates and ask them questions, The campus radio station WWOO will broadcast the forum. Filing for the offices of senators, editors and business managers of The Western Carolinian and Catamount and Miss Western Carolina University are set for April 1-3. WCU Band Will Make State Tour The Western Carolina University Concert Band will be on a North Carolina tour this week under the direction of William F. Curtin, WCU director of bands. First stop on the tour will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Lexington where the 60-piece touring band will play at Lexington High School. The band will spend the night in Lexington and play at 10:10 a, m, Thursday at A. L. Brown High School in Kannapolis. At 8 p.m. Thursday, the band will present the first of three public concerts. The Thursday performance will be held in the new recital hall at Concord High School. Friday, the band will appear at 9:45 a.m. In Hamlet High School, At 8 p.m, Friday, the second public concert will be presented at 8 p.m, in the auditorium of Vardell Hall junior college in Red Springs. Saturday, the band will give a public concert at 8 p.m. in the gymnasium at Wilmington College. The tour repertoire will include classics, Broadway show music, novelty numbers and marches, Curtin said. News Briefe Dr. Renfro Dr. Richard Renfro, head of the Western Carolina University Music Department, was selected by the North Carolina Music Teachers Association to serve as a judge at the Hickory District Piano Contest at Lenoir Rhyne College March 23. Eighty-one pianists participated in the junior and senior high school divisions. Spanish Club This month's meeting of El Espanol will be held Thursday, March 28, in McKee at 6:00. The guest speaker will be Mr, Chrisman, former Spanish professor at WCU, who will speak to the club about his recent trip to Spain. Members are reminded to bring $1.50 for dues.
