30 WCnewsmagazine | Catamounts make records and sweep A&T By Ryan Sarda * Wenewsmagazine April 13, 2006 was a record day for Catamount junior Ashley Adams as she led her Catamount softball team past the Aggies of North Carolina A&T. Adams hit three home runs in the double header sweep of the Aggies, which Put her into the Southern Conference record books. She tied the conference's single season home run record with 17 homers on the season. With the leadership from Adams, the Catamounts defeated the Aggies 4-0, and 6-2 on the day. The softball program, which is in its first year, also tied another record on the field against A&T. The Catamount softball team (28-15) tied the Southem Conference record of the most home runs in a season with 63 homers. Game one started off with Adams first home run in the top of the second inning, to put Western up early 1-0. The score remained the same until the top of the fourth inning when the Catamounts scored the final three runs of the game Freshman Lauren Ross, who was 3-for-6 on the day, led the fourth inning off with a single up the middle. She advanced to second as fellow freshman Stephanie Beatty bunted and sacrificed her teammate. Samm. Keppel, who had a career day at the plate going 4-for-5 on the day, helped Ross advance to third with a single of her own. Freshman Allyson McCubbins drove Ross home as she singled down the leftfield line, making the score 2-0. Keppel and McCubbins eventually got home as sophomore Savannah Filley drove them home with a two run single towards left field, Freshman pitcher Jenny Jackson looked unstoppable on the mound as she threw for seven innings. Jackson gave up three hits and threw seven strikeouts and no walks in the contest as she earned her second shutout victory of the season. Game two of the doubleheader ended with another victory for the Catamounts. They cruised past the Aggies 6-2, with Adams hitting two home runs in the contest. In the first inning, Western again scored the first run of the game. This time it was freshman Heather Pritchard who reached base after being walked. She eventually scored on a wild pitch by the Aggies. Inthe third inning, Adams helped the Catamounts double the score as she hit her second of three home runs on the day, giving the Cats a 2-0 lead. In the fourth inning, the Catamounts again doubled the score when Keppel and McCubbins added two more runs for the Cats. The bottom of the fourth inning is when the Aggies scored their first run of the contest. They loaded the bases with two outs, and Catamount freshman pitcher Mendy McKenzie walked the batter from A&T to drive in the Aggies first run of the series. The Catamounts redeemed themselves in the following inning when MeCubbins hit a double to left field, which drove home junior Nikki Bost; this put the Cats up 5-1 in the game. In the sixth inning, the Cats completed their scoring as Adams once again knocked a long ball out of the park for her third home run of the game. Adams home run was the one that tied both records made by the Catamounts. The Aggies scored their second run of the game in the bottom of the sixth following two consecutive doubles. However, the 6-2 margin was as close as the Aggies would get on the day. For McKenzie, the win was her 15* of the season as she only gave up two runs in the game. She gave up four hits and five walks. She also added con to the record day as she tied her own WCU record when she threw for 11 strikeouts. Next up for the Catamounts is a road trip to Tennessee to face Souther Conference rival Chattanooga. The first year Catamounts are making noise in the Southern Conference standings and are looking to take over first place. A series win against Chattanooga will be their fourth straight SoCon series victory. Catamounts Win Three Game Series Over App State 2-1 By Ryan Sarda Wenewsmagazine The Western Carolina Catamount baseball team cruised past the Appalachian State Mountaineers in their weekend series. In the two Victories over the Mountaineers, the Catamounts were led by the powerful hitting of sophomores Blake Murphy and Steven Strausbaugh. The Cats (17-11, 6-3 SoCon) shut out the Mountaineers and defeated them 11-0 in game one. Led by the tremendous pitching of junior Brock Thomburg, the Catamounts looked unstoppable against the Mountaineers. Thomburg, who moved to 2-1 on the season, pitched seven innings and gave up five hits with two walks, and two strikeouts, The Catamount defense looked impressive, but their offense is What stole the show against Appalachian. Four Catamounts hithhomeruns. in game one of the series. Trey McDaniel started the slugfest when he hit his eighth homerun of the year in the second inning. Following McDaniel's homerun, later on in the game, Murphy hit his sixth homer of the year: sophomore Steven Strausbaugh hit his 19" of the season, and junior Donnie Wilson returned from a knee injury and went 3-for-4, including a homer of his own. The 11-0 victory was the Catamounts second shut out of the season. Game two did not go the way the Catamounts had hoped. It came down to the final innings of the contest, but it was Appalachian State who walked off Lackey Field in Boone with a 4-3 victory over the Cats. With two outs in the first inning, Strausbaugh hit his 14" homerun of the season to put the Cats up early, 1-0. In the bottom of the second, however, Appalachian State took the lead away from the Cats and scored three runs, taking a 3-1 advantage. The game remained scoreless after the second inning with the Mountaineers clinging to their two-run lead. In the sixth inning, the Catamounts ended the scoring drought and scored two runs on sophomore Jonathan Greene's two run homerun, which also drove in Murphy. In the bottom of the sixth, with the game tied at 3 apiece, the Mountaineers drove in the winning run on a sacrifice fly. Appalachians Chris Baker reached base on a double, followed by David Rubinsteins single. Appalachian's Adam Beasley then hit a sacrifice fly which sent home Chris Baker for the winning run. The Catamounts competed hard in the later innings of the contest; however, tough pitching from the relief pitchers kept the score at 4-3 the rest of the way. Western sophomore pitcher Tyler Sexton fell to 5-2.on the season, giving up seven hits, four runs, and two walks, and throwing five strikeouts. Western rebounded from the close 4-3 loss over App the day before, with a pounding 15-4 victory over the Mountaineers on Sunday April 2. The victory gave the Catamounts the series victory over the Mountaineers. Blake Murphy led the Cats in this contest as he went 4- {for-4, including a three run home run, and six RBI. Senior pitcher Brian McCullen picked up the victory on the mound for the Catamounts. His record improves to 3-1 on the season, as he pitched four innings in relief. McCullen gave five hits, and one run, but threw two strikeouts. Freshman relief pitcher Bryan Corbett threw a Perfect ninth inning which helped the Catamounts maintain their 15-4 advantage. The demolition of Appalachian should provide some confidence for the Cats, as they head to South Carolina to face the seventh ranked team in America, the Clemson Tigers.
