Disc golf taking flight at Western Carolina Univer: With Spring just around the comer, students, faculty and staff at Western Carolina University might have a new recreational activity to Participate in soon: disc goff. Disc golf is played much like traditional golf, only instead of hitting a ball into a hole, you throw a disc into an elevated metal basket. As players progress from the tee to the hole, the trees, shrubs and terrain changes in and around the fairways provide challenging obstacles. Ultimately, the putt is tossed into the basket and the hole is completed. The goal of disc golf is the same as traditional golf: to complete the course in the fewest number of shots. Disc golf (also referred to as Frisbee golf) is a fun, inexpensive, safe, healthy and environment-friendly game that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and abilities, said Dr. Justin Menickelli, Assistant Professor in Health and Human Performance at Western and member of the Disc Golf Course Development Committee, Dr. Menickelil is just one of 11 members of the committee, Which includes other members of the HHP department, Intramurals department, community members, graduate students, and undergraduate students of the Parks & Recreation Majors and Physical Education Majors clubs, as well as a certified Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA) Course Designer. Disc golf is a sport that is growing in popularity across the United States, especially on college campuses. In fact, it has been reported to be the fastest growing sportin the United States. According to the Professional Disc GolfAssociation (www.pdga.com), there are approximately 1,350 disc golf courses worldwide. In North Carolina, there are 56 courses; including courses on the campuses of UNC-Chapel Hill, East Carolina University, and Mars Hill College. The closest course to Western Carolina University is in Asheville, The disc golf committee has received outstanding support from the students, faculty and staff at Westem during the early phases of their signature petition drive. Students are responsive to the Possibility of a disc golf course and the benefits it will have on the campus. Disc golf is a fun form of exercise that can have a significant impact on our quality-oflife, said Dr. Menickelli. WCnewsmagazine 21 y Perhaps anew activity is what the students at Westen need. According to data published by the WCU Health Center, 45% of students are overweight or obese, 28% do not exercise at all, and 34% exercise only 1-2 days a week. Disc goff is a low-intensity sport that harkens back to the day when people went for a walk in the park and tossed a Frisbee around, golf has low capital and maintenance costs, is environmentally friendly, canbe played year- round in all climates and is enjoyed immediately even by beginners. The only equipment needed is a disc (or Frisbee) which costs around $8 and can be used ) over and over again. Disc golf is @ uniquely environment-friendly sport. Unlike a traditional golf course, a disc golf course does not require any alteration of the existing _landscape, watering or mowing. Rather, the course utilizes the existing landscape with litte environmental and visual impact. The committee foresees. other potential benefits of disc golf as a Popular intramural sport, Possible activity course offered by the HHP department, potential for public tournaments that bring prospective students to campus and generates public well as the potential for disc golf to become a lifelong sport for Western students. The installation of a 9-hole disc golf course on the Western Carolina University campus will simply involve the construction of tees and the installation of inexpensive/durabie signs and baskets. Under the proper supervision of the Disc Golf Course Development Committee, volunteers will install the equipment in accordance with manufacturer instructions. If you would like more information or would like to sign the disc golf Course petition, contact Dr. Justin Menickelli at menickeli@email, wou.edu or stop by his office in Reid 103.
