  • 8 WCnewsmagazine By Matt Johnson WCU Senior, Communications Waynesville, NC Domestic Spying or Terrorist Surveillance; no matter what the "New Speak" name for it is this week, seems to have many people missing the point...and | feel this is by design. No one, on the left or the right, is saying we should not be listening in on terrorist conversations. Carl Rove on the other hand would like most of us to think this. In an address at the Republican National Committee's winter meeting on January 20, 2006 Rove said, President Bush believes if Al Qaeda is calling somebody in America, it is in our national security interest to know who they're calling and why. Some important Democrats clearly disagree. No, they do not. And neither do the many Republicans who have concerns about this program. Of course we want you listening to. phone conversations involving possible members of Al Qaeda. We are simply wondering why you did not get a warrant to do so, The United States Constitution states that all searches and seizures (in this case, the recording of a phone call where one ends within the United States would be both) require a warrant. Don't believe me? The Fourth Amendment to the Constitution, part of the original ten amendments known as the Bill Of Rights reads as follows: The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things fo be seized. Where in those lines do you see a loophole to allow the President of the United States to authorize the National Security Agency (NSA) to spy on American citizens without a warrant? This is not brain surgery. My car title has more legal speak in it than this amendment. The President's NSA operation to. listen in on suspected Al Qaedamembers calling into and out of the United States of America is blatantly illegal. Singles Awareness Day By Carla Batchelor + WCnewsmagazine With Valentine's Day quickly approaching, the sighs of singletons everywhere become more apparent. While many feel that Valentine's Day is just another way for Hallmark and other corporations to make a profit off their pink and red sale items, it can be a chance for you and your friends to celebrate your singleness. While this sounds like just another way to celebrate a typically depressing day, it can be a chance to let loose and have fun. Some ideas for a fun Singles Awareness Day include: Secret Valentine: While this sounds a bit omy for typical college students, it can be a great way for you and your friends to have a good time. Draw names out of a hat a week before Singles Day and then set a monetary limit, such as $5; or make a theme, like anything 80s. It could be anything that you and your friends have in common just to make the game more fun and a bit more memorable. Movie Night: Rent a group of movies that celebrate ingle life." While this can be hard to do with Hollywood's frequent and typical romantic comedies, it can be done. Movies such as Bridget Jones Diary or The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants could be fun. You could spice the night up with pizza, popcom, or anything that you and your friends would like while veggin out and celebrating how great it can be to be single. If you want to have a sappy movie fest, that can be a lot of fun as well, Rent movies such as Sleepless in Seattle, 50 First Dates or even When Many missing the point on domestic spying vle Op-Ed This operation is of a serious and secret nature. A special court was established in 1978 known as the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act or FISA court. This top secret court is specially designed to issue warrants for wire taps and searches dealing with national security surveillance involving American citizens. In its 28 year history, it has denied warrants only four times, all of which were in 2003. Basically it is a rubber stamp. It also allows for surveillance to begin immediately as long as the court is notified within 72 hours so speed and flexibility is not an issue as the administration has suggested. Whythendidthe White House not gotothe FISAcourt whichatthetimehad neverdeniedawarrant, togetthe proper andlegal warrants? Whatwere they going tobe doing thatled them to think the FISA court would not approve their requests? The president even went out of his way to lie to the American people on January 29, 2004 at a campaign stop in Buffalo, New York. Speaking about the Patriot Act he said, "Secondly, there are such things as roving wiretaps. Now, by the way, any time you hear the United States government talking about wiretap, itrequires ~ a wiretap requires a court order. Nothing has changed, by the way. When we're talking about chasing down terrorists, we're talking about getting a court order before we do so. By this time the NSA Surveillance Program had been in place for almost two years. He knew this was a lie. Why would he blatantly mislead the American People? Why not just skip over the issue or reword it? As much as many on the right would like it to, this issue is not going to go away. There are already quite a few lawsuits in the works that will probably {go all the way to the Supreme Court. If it is determined that the President Violated the law, the only course of action will be his removal from office. As Republican Senator Arlen Specter of Pennsyivania put it on ABC's This Week, impeachment is a remedy. After impeachment, you could have a criminal prosecution. Commentary Harry Met Sally. This can be a great way to hang out, drink some wine or beer and devour comfort foods. Anti-Valentines Dinner: Going out to eat on Valentine's Day can be a struggle for many singles out there, but if you go out in a group, then there will be less emphasis on being part of a couple. Round up some of your closest friends, dress up, head out to Asheville or just to Syiva, and have a nice, relaxing dinner with a group of friends. At least this way you do not have to worry about that goodnight kiss. Game Night: Get your friends together and have a competition on Play Station, or whatever game system you have in the dorm room. So much time is spent playing these games the other 364 days of the year, so why not turn it into a fun competition to celebrate? Spa Night: Get a bunch of your friends together and just relax in your pajamas with some nail polish, face masks and even a good movie. It can be a fun and relaxing way to hang out with your giris and just vent about how Valentine's Day can be so annoying. No matter what your plans for Singles Awareness Day may include, just remember to have a good time and relax. You and your friends are not the only singletons on the planet, so just go out, let loose and have a great time. You and your friends can celebrate Singles Awareness Day any of the suggested ways, or be creative and come up with your own theme, idea or location to celebrate that fact you are single and wonderfull
