Its time to pilot the pilot: SPARCs Safe Ride program gets the green light By Gary Takacs wEnewsmagazine When students return from their Spring Breaks this year, they'll find a new use for the CatTran. Western will finally begin the SPARC (Study to Prevent Alcohol-Related Consequences) pilot safe ride to and from Sylva businesses on Thursday and Friday nights. initially, one CatTran bus will serve as the safe ride vehicle; it wil run on the hour every hour from 9 p.m. until 1 a.m. Student use volumes will decide on how many more vehicles can be used for the program. The cost will be $2 per ride or $4 round trip. The route will include between six and eight stops in the Sylva area, and there is no need to call them, they will be there at a specific time using a set schedule. Tickets will be available at participating local businesses; Guadalupe: The place to be By Carrie Petrea_ + WGnewsmagazine Tired of mundane, run-of-the-mill dinners? Do you want variety with a kick? Are you ready for a different dining experience? Then go to Guadalupe Caf, a bar and grille, 606 Main Street in Syiva, NC, in the old Harolds Drug Store building. Before entering the caf, look for the board with the Specials of the Day located just outside the door. The specialties are rotated periodically to give customers a change in pace. Guadalupe isnt an average bar, either. It has an almost coffee shop- like atmosphere with an inviting dcor, featuring artwork by local artists. Though a litte small, the restaurant uses its space well with enough room to fit a large crowd. Dinner is served 5-10 p.m. on weekdays, 6-10 p.m. on Saturdays, but the restaurant is closed on Sundays and Wednesdays. Between 10 p.m. 2 a.m., the restaurant turns into a full-fledged bar, featuring live music by local bands. Each night may be different, depending on the particular band booked, but Thursday nights are usually jazz nights by local jazz musician, Chad Hallyburton. Smoking is also permitted after 10 p.m. The staff is courteous and polite. Customers are always greeted when entering and are invited to sit anywhere in the restaurant. An.extensive wine and beer listis available with every dinner menu. The wine is mainly of South American style and most of the draft beer is made by Heinzelmannchen Brewery right down the road. High alcoholic content beer is also offered, ranging up to 11% alcohol. A nice selection of appetizers is available. One of the most popular is the salsa platter with four different types of homemade salsas, ranging froma mild tomato salsa to a spicy and. tangy fruit mediey, and is served with a plateful of salted, blue tortila chips. Itcan be an entire meal in itself WCnewsmagazine therefore drivers will not take money for tickets as a safety precaution. The campus pick-up location will be the crosswalk between Dodson Cafeteria and the University Center. Exact times will be posted on signs at the pick-up point. Drivers have already been recruited as well as a travel buddy who will accompany the driver on every ride to make sure passengers behave themselves. The safe ride program was invented to serve as a designated driver service to ensure that students travel to and from campus safely. If you want to know what you can do to help, contact Elizabeth Liki Werle at 227-3774. Other appetizers can include fried plantains and Caribbean-style curried goat taco. Regular menu items include make-your- own tacos, quesadillas, burritos andnachos. These dishes range from $3-5.50 plus additional. toppings, butwith the amount of food one receives, it doesn't take much to fill up quickly Customers can very easily eat at Guadalupe for under $10. Specialty menu items are rotated periodically and can include mango pork tacos, roasted garlic shrimp pasta, elk chil, and other tropical-fusion foods for a unique taste. The roasted garlic shrimp pasta is served with sauted jumbo shrimp, mushrooms and tomatoes, topped with basil and organic pasta in a light citrus cream sauce. This dish is sure to please anyonel The cayenne and lime seared tilapia is a pan-seared fillet served over sofrito beans and fresh spring greens in a grilled tortilla, topped with spicy fruit salsa. The fillet is so tender, you dont even need a knife. Expect these menu items to be around $13-15 a plate. Guadalupe is a firm supporter of the community; most of the food served is organic and provided by local businesses. Though obviously shrimp and other saltwater seafood are not from local businesses, the owner, Jen Pearson, tries to stick with local foods as much as possible. Desserts are also on the menu and are provided mainly by Annie's Bakery and occasionally by the Mad Batter. Case in point, Guadalupe Caf is a very different, very inviting experience. It's definitely a place to go after a long day of work or class. it's worth checking back often to see what's new, whether it be the menu, the bands or the artwork, says John Bubacz, waiter for Guadalupe and owner of the Bodega. Try it sometime. Your taste buds will thank you. Guadalupe Caf also accepts Visa and MasterCard. For more information, call 586-9877. 7.
