  • Coming soon to the U.C. movie theater By Russell Conover WCnewsmagazine Are you in the mood for a good movie? Western Carolina Universitys movie theater, located on the third floor of the University Center, has just what you're looking for. The coming term will bring a variety of pictures to campus, and the theater is hoping for its biggest crowds ever. The movies that will be shown in the U.C. Theater this semester are ready for audiences to enjoy all semester long, All movies begin at 9:00 p.m., except for Saturday matinee screenings that begin at 5:00 p.m. General admission is $4, and the price with a student LD. is $2. Admission includes a movie ticket, popcorn and a drink. So come on out, enjoy the great movies being shown in the U.C. Movie Theater, and bring along all of your friends. Lots of good films await. The following movies will be shown in the University Center Movie Theater this semester: The Legend of Zorro (February 9-11, 2006) Antonio de la Vega (Antonio Banderas) and his wife, Elena (Catherine Zeta- Jones) respond to a threat to California's pending statehood. Saw 2 (February 16-18, 2006) Several people get trapped in a shelter and must escape before they die from a harmful gas. Jigsaw, the enemy, sets traps along the way to try to stop them. North Country (February 23-25, 2006) This movie is a fictionalized account of the story of Jenson vs. Eveleth Mines, the first major successful sexual harassment case in the U.S. WCnewsmagazine Rent (March 16-18, 2006) The Bohemians live in the East Village of New York City, and this movie is based on the award-winning musical that tells their story. Chicken Little (March 23-25, 2006) Featuring 3D animation, "Chicken Little" tells the story of a chicken who must overcome his ruined reputation to save his town from aliens. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (March 30-Apri 1, 2006) Continuing the saga of boy wizard Harry Potter, this movie tells the story of him competing in a dangerous school competition for wizards although he is under-aged. The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe (April 6-8, 2006) Four children discover a world within a wardrobe and go within to free the worlds people and animals. Pride and Prejudice (April 20-22, 2006) Based on a Jane Austen novel, this humorous love story tells of five sisters who get a breath of fresh air when a wealthy young man arrives in their neighborhood. All of these plot summaries are based on those found on www.imdb.com. Vagina Warriors: The New Revolution V-Day 2006 Western Carolina University A global movement to stop violence against women and girls, V-day (the V representing Victory, Valentine, and Vagina) promotes creative events to increase awareness, raise money and revitalize the spirit of existing anti- violence organizations. Eve Ensler's The Vagina Monologues inspired the non-profit organization, V-Day, in 1998. "Until the violence stops has been decreed the motto of V-Day, The Violence, which V-Day batties includes rape, battery, incest, female genital mutilation and sexual slavery. The Vagina Monologues, part of the V-Day campaign, will be performed at Western Carolina University on February 15 and 16, at 7:00 p.m., in the Fine and Performing Arts Theater. Ms. Beth Keefauver, an instructor with the English department, will direct this year's production, and_ its stars consist of students, staff and community members. Last year, the Womens Center's V-Day campaign raised over $5,000, and for 2006, they hope to double that amount. Justice to Comfort Women, the Spotlight of V-Days 2006 campaign, demands attention and reparations for. the_women (some minors, some recruited, Puess Release some detained) forced to perform sexual acts with the Japanese troops of the Asian/Pacific wars. The cruelty inflicted on these women occurred between 1992 and 1945. Finally, fifly years later, Korean victims of troops assaults ripped through the solemn silence, spoke the truth and_ inspired thousands of other women to do the same. V-Day 2006 joins with these survivors and other womens groups of east and southeast Asia in their fight for human decency and that which stands upright. Tickets for the Women's Center production of The Vagina Monologues are on sale on campus in the Center for Student Involvement, Hinds University Center room 319 (828) 227-7450, City Lights Bookstore in Syiva (828) 586- 9499, and Osondu Booksellers, in Waynesville (828) 456-8062, Student tickets are $5, and non- student tickets are $10. Avoid last years disappointment of being tumed away at the door, buy tickets in advance, as the 2008. show will. surely draw a crowd.
