  • 20 | WCnewsmagazine Lady Cats drop pair in the Seminole Classic By Zachary Colburn. Wenewsmagazine Missed opportunities and blown leads caused Western Carolina to drop a pair in the Seminole Classic on the campus of Florida State University. In the first game of their tournament, Florida State went 10-10 in the final minute of the game to take the win over Western, 75-67. The first half involved 7 ties, in which Western went into the break up by 5, that would be the largest lead by either team in the first 20 minutes. After the break Western's 5-point lead turned into an 8-point deficit while enduring a 15-2 run by FSU to open the second half. WCU would then go on a 13-6 run to cut the lead to one, 47-46 with 9 minutes left to go. The two teams would then exchange baskets over the next 6 minutes before the Lady Cats to their final lead, 59-58 with 4:13 left in the game. The final minutes of the game saw a drought by Western and saw Florida State ice the game with 10 consecutive free-throws made. Lauren Powell led the Catamounts with 18 points on 7-10 shooting while coming off the bench. Teshymia Tillman added a career-high 11 points to go along with 3 assists and 3 steals in her collegiate debut. Jessika Johnson Founds out the double digit scorers with 10 and adding 6 rebounds. Missed opportunities led to a 2-point loss for the Lady Cats in the consolation game of the Seminole Classic against the Raiders of Wright State, 65-63. Wester would lead by as much as 12 points midway through the first half. The lead would stay around double digits until the 7:10 mark when the Raiders would cut the lead to 5 at 23-18. WCU would counter with baskets from Lauren Powell and Chevon Keith, that would get the lead back up 10 but Wright State would trim the lead to 3 going into halftime, 30-27. After the intermission, Western would once again stumble to start the half but allowing Wright State to go on 9-3 run and see they go from being 3 up to 3. down, 36-33. The two teams would then exchange baskets with Western regaining the 1 point advantage, 39-38 with 14:21 left in the game. Wright State would mount a 14-2 run that involved 9 straight made free-throws that would eventually find the Lady Cats down by their biggest deficit of the game, 52-41. Western would rally with a 9-0 run of their own to tie the game at 2 with 7 minutes to play in regulation. Wright State would manage to go up by 4 inside three minutes, but Erin Mat would find Teshymia Tillman for the basket to cut the deficit to one with just a minute left. Missed opportunities would haunt the Lady Cats as Wright State regained a 5-point advantage with 12 seconds left as Keith drained a long 3-pointer to trail by 2. Powell was the only Lady Catamount to be named to the Alle Tournament team while chipping in 13 points for game while averaging 15.5 points per game for the tournament. Chevon Keith would lead the Catamounts with 14 points and a game-high 9 rebounds. Sophomore Jessika Johnson was the only other double digit scorer with 12, Lady Cats get their first win of the year By Zachary Colburn Wenewsmagazine Numerous records were set by Western Carolina en route to a 79-54 win over the Terriers of Wofford University. The victory is the Lady Cats first win of the year and their first conference win. Despite trailing early in the game 4-0, freshman Lauren Powell would make her first of four three-pointers of the night. Trailing early by one in the game, Western would take the lead for good with 18:19 left in the first half. The Lady Cats would go on a 15-4 run to go up by 10 with 12:20 left in the half, he Lady Terriers would chip away at the lead to come within 6. Four minutes later, Western would go on an 18-6 run to go up 36-18. The Lady Cats would lead 38-21 going into the half. The lead was just the fourth time that the Lady Cats have lead at the half this year. The 21 points scored by Wofford is the fewest allowed by a Kellie Harper coached team in her tenure at Western. The Lady Cats started out the 2 half with a 24-7 run over the first ten minutes to grab a commanding 62-28 lead with 9:19 left in the game. The defense would set the tempo of the half by forcing 9 turnovers and 10 missed shots, The Lady Terriers would get as close as 20 points with 3:52 left, but could not get it any closer as Western would take the win by 25, 79-54, The Lady Cats shot a season best 46.6% from the floor. Western shot a season best 20-25 from the free throw line for 80%. Even though WCU had 19 steals, they had a season worst 30 tumovers, but did force 33 turnovers while limiting Wofford to the lowest point total of the season (54). Powell led three Catamounts in double figures with 19 points, good for her team-leading 8 double digit scoring output of the season, Sophomore Ashley Pellom set a personal best in scoring with 11 points, 9 of those points coming courtesy of the charity stripe. Along with 11 points, Pellom had 7 rebounds and a career high 8 assists. Chevon Keith rounded out the double digit scorers with 10 points and 3 steals. Freshman April Parker tied her career best with 9 points and 7 rebounds,
