  • 10. | WCnewsmagazine _ New Years around the world By Maegan Cleckley + wGnewsmagazine New Year's is one of the oldest holidays in the world, dating back 4,000 years ago to Babylonian times. Over the years, it has evolved to the customs and traditions of each culture. Despite the difference in tradition, and even the dates it is celebrated, the purpose of New Year's has remained the same throughout history: the hope of health, prosperity and happiness. Worldwide, New Year's is observed in the presence of friends and | family; however, the customs and rituals vary significantly. In the United States, the Waterford Crystal ball is dropped in Times Square at 11:59 and descends exactly at midnight in the presence of millions of viewers. This tradition dates back to 1907; however, the "New Year's Kiss dates back much further to a | time when masked balls were common, The masks were said to represent evils from the old year, and the kiss symbolized the purification of the New Year. In Spain, El Puerto del Sol is the equivalent of Times Square, in which the masses gather to countdown to midnight. For each chime, Spaniards eat one grape, which represents good luck during the next twelve months. This | ritual is synonymous with the Peruvian New Year, the difference being that a thirteenth grape is eaten to represent good luck in the upcoming year. In Wales, bad spirits are released with the opening of the back door at the first toll of midnight, and the luck of the New Year is welcomed by opening the front door at the twelfth chime of midnight. There are some rituals that symbolize the same idea from culture to | culture. Fireworks, for example, are often displayed in countries such as China | and Austria, to ward off evil. The loud noise and cracking is meant to scare them | away. Sydney, Australia is home to the worlds largest fireworks display and attracts over one milion viewers to its harbors every New Year's to celebrate, The Philippines also begin their year with fireworks, which represent happiness, hile children jump up and down ten times to ensure that they will grow in the upcoming year. Noise is often used as a way to ward off evil during New Year's celebrations in places such as Iran, as well. During Chahar Shanbeh Soori, or "Eve of Celebration, a bonfire is set for people to leap over and shout a praise giving thanks to a previous year of health and happiness. Children run through the streets banging on pots and pans with spoons asking people for treats. This, beating of spoons is meant to beat at the last of the unlucky before the New Year. Iranians also have a ritual, Koozeh Shekastan, that involves breaking earthen jars that hold their bad fortunes. Another popular ritual, Gereh-gosha- ee, instructs them to make a knot at the comer of a handkerchief and request that the first passerby undo the knot to remove their misfortune. In some cultures, objects are used to predict ones future for the year or years to come. During the Korean New Year, carnations are used as predictions of a young girl's future. Three carnations are placed in her hair, and the wilting process is said to determine the period of difficulty in her life. Ifthe bottom flower wits first, she will be miserable her entire life; ifthe middle flower wilts first, she will experience pain during her youth; if the top flower wilts firs, she will experience her most difficult periods late in life, Regardless of the various customs and traditions, New Years remains to be one of the most widely celebrated holidays worldwide. In the midst of cultural, ethnic and racial differences, New Year's is one of holidays that represents the same ideas to everyone. 828.293.3600 00.395.HELP.
