  • WCU Golf team finishes 18th at Furman, freshman Matt Cook finishes 7th overall by Andy Gambill * WCnewsmagazine The WCU Golf team gave a valiant effort for three days at Furmans University Golf Course, but ended up finishing only 18th out of 20. The Cats final score was 905, but they did beat the bigger University of Toledo by 11 strokes. They also thrashed rival Appalachian State by 37 strokes as the Mountaineers finished dead last in the tournament. Western still had some great individual performances, though, as freshman Matt Cook finished 7th overall. Cook shot a 215 overall in the three day tournament. The 215 was one under par for the course. It was only Cooks fourth collegiate tournament but his third straight top-10 finish. He already has one tournament win and a runner-up finish, showing that he has a tremendously bright future for the WCnewsmagazine shooting 224. Morrow had totals of 77, 72 and 75. Freshman Matt Dowdy had the best Sunday for a Catamount as he shot an even- par 72. Dowdy finished with an overall score of 232, which was good enough for 83rd overall. Chase Kress and Blake Wray were the last two finishers for the Cats. Kress finished with 236, and Blake finished with 237. Even though WCU finished 18th, the 905 score was the 11th best 54-hole team score in history. South Carolina-Aiken won the team part of the tournament with an 865 score, while Woffords Daniel Sloan won the individual title in a playoff against USC-Aikens Scott Brown. WCU has one last tournament before the conference tourney. That tournament will be the Belmont Invitational in Franklin, Tennessee Catamounts. The 215 Cook shot was the 4th best 54-hole total in WCU school history. Cook shot a 70, 70 and a 75 for the tournament. Sophomore Tripp Morrow also had a strong showing for the Cats as he finished 37th overall on April 3-4. Furman Photo by Mark Haskett Womens golf team finishes 3rd at the Lady Herd/El Diablo Intercollegiat by Andy Gambill * WEnewsmagazine The Lady Cats golf team rallied from 8th place to 3rd place in the final day of the Lady Herd/El Diablo Intercollegiate in Citrus Springs, Florida. Led by junior Ashley Hovda, freshman Kandy Carland and sophomore Bianca Melone, the Lady Cats finished right behind Coastal Carolina and Marshall but in front of bigger and more prestigious schools like Illinois, Ohio, Cincinnati, St. Johns, Boston College and Dartmouth. The Cats finished with a three-day score of 949, which was 3 strokes behind Marshall but 41 strokes behind first place Coastal Carolina. Hovda finished 5th by shooting 230 overall as she had totals of 81, 72 and 77. Hovdas 72 was the team low for the tournament and was the second lowest total shot by any golfer during the tournament. It was Hovdas fourth top-10 finish of the season. Charleston and Chattanooga by Andy Gambill Wenewsmagazine The Lady Catamount tennis team notched its fourth win of the season at home on Saturday, March 19 with a 4-3 defeat over Gardner Webb. The Lady Cats were led by excellent performances from freshmen Trish Hanson and Ashley Harris. Hanson defeated Melissa DeJong in straight sets (6-4, 6- 3), while Harris also won in straight sets over Sara Zirnheld (6-2, 6-1). Junior Katherine Ptak also turned in a strong performance as she beat Molly Hoeffner (6-3, 4-6, 6-2). Ptak and Hanson teamed up to win in doubles against DeJong and Hoeffner (8-6). Harris also won in doubles as she teamed up with Kristin Cotton to face Monica Walser and Carol Pancia. Harris and Cotton dominated | the Walser-Pancia duo 8-2. Melone finished with rounds of 79, 80 and 79. Western also had contributions from Brandy Andersen and Lucinda Davies. Andersen was competing in her first event since suffering a hand injury, and she : improved in each round. She shot a 243 overall and had rounds of 85, 80 and 78. She finished 33rd overall. Davies improved dramatically on the course over the three days. After shooting a 94 the first day, she shot 82 and 81 on the final two days. She finished with a score of 257 and finished 67th overall. Western will travel to Harrisonburg, Virginia next for the Bonnie Hoover Invitational hosted by James Madison University. tits The Cats didn't have as much luck against the College of Charleston or the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. The College of Charleston swept Western 7-0 on Sunday, March 20. UTC won by the score of 5-1, as freshman Ashley Harris won her first Southern Conference singles match. She defeated Emily Harpe in straight sets (6-2, 7-5). The Western tennis team has three straight upcomin: 9, 10 and 13. The team will face Elon on the the next day at the same time. UNC-Chario the 13th and play against the Cats at 2:30 p.m
