LATA RRR 25 WCnewsmagazine Double plays and hot bats bring Cats a win on a cold night by Ryan Fussell * WCnewsmagazine The mens baseball team took on the UNC-Asheville Bulldogs on April 6 and came through with another win. This win brought the Catamounts to a 19-10 record on the season. Asheville started off the game with one run scored on a bloop fly into center field but did not get any more after a 6-4-3 double play ended the inning. Western failed to answer having batters go three-up, three-down. Western would do the same to the Bulldogs, getting each batter out that came up to the plate. Junior Tim Hallam made an impressive backhanded- stab at a lined ground ball, stopping it and throwing out the Bulldog runner at first. Red-shirt freshman Andrew Larrimore would strike out the next batter, and get the third to pop out to shortstop. The Cats would be led off with a single by freshman Steven Strausbaugh. Two batters later, senior Chris Davis would chop a ground ball over the third baseman. With two outs, and runners in scoring position, freshman Nate Hall would hit a double off the wall in right field, picking up a pair of RBI's in the process as both runners were able to score. The Cats would end the inning on a line out but ahead 2-1. UNC-A managed to get one out and draw a walk to start the third, but it was quickly ended as Hall would pick off a line drive down the third baseline and rifle it over to first for the inning ending double play. Mike McGowan led off the third with a double, followed by Hallam driving a ground ball off the pitcher's foot for an eventual out. Hallam did, however, move McGowan from 2" to 3 on the play. Following suit at driving baseballs at the pitcher, senior Jared Greenwood ripped a line drive up the middle that nearly took of the Bulldog pitchers head and scored the runner from third at the same time. The Cats ended the inning shortly after scoring the run and Started the top of the 4", up 3-1 Western made quick work of Asheville in the fourth, allowing no runs scored, on just one hit. However, the same happened for WCU as Davis reached first on a throwing error by Asheville, but the next three batters each fanned at the plate to end the inning on strikeouts. After a lead-off walk for the Bulldogs to start the 5", Western turned another 6-4-3 double play. The next batter grounded-out to shortstop to end Asheville's at bat. At this point, both teams seemed to have figured out how to play the other as the Cats had three straight retired on fielded plays. Regardless, Western had already done enough damage to make UNC-A have to pick up the pace. Their second out was made on a pop-up just in front of home plate, and their third came in the form of strikeout. With nothing going well in batting for three straight innings, the Bulldogs already showed a little despair in the manner that they took the field. Each player seemed to have a little drag in his step, but this would only be the start of their woes. A Texas-leaguer hit by sophomore Trey McDaniels found itself dropping into center field for a lead off single. A sacrifice bunt by Davis looked to move the runner to second in exchange for an out, but a poor throw by the fielding third baseman saw McDaniels moving to 3, as Davis continued to round 1* and arrive at 2". Freshman Jonathan Greene ripped a liner past the shortstop for an RBI single, but Greene made it to second as the Bulldogs tried to make the play at the plate. With runners on 2" and 3 still, UNC-A got the first out of the inning on a ground out. A deep sac-fly by freshman Jason Haynes scored the runner from third and moved the runner on 2 up a base. Freshman Barrett Shaft lined an RBI single over the second baseman to bring the score to 6-1 over UNC-A as the inning would end. The Bulldogs tried to answer with a lead-off single, followed by a stolen base to get the runner to second with no outs. A ground out to shortstop moved the runner to third with just an out. The next hit went right back to the pitcher and caught the Asheville runner off the base. What should have been a routine run-down broke down as the throw to the third baseman was off the mark and ended up headed towards left field. The runner, in turn, scored, pulling the score to 6-2 and the batter made second. The next batter hit to the shortstop, who fired to first for the put-out, but as he threw, the runner from second broke for third. Westerns first baseman fired back to third, catching the runner out by a mile, completing yet another double play for the Cats. Lead-off singles Greenwood and Strausbaugh were followed by a ground- out to move them to 2 and 3%. With runners in scoring position, a line-drive up the middle yielded two more runs for the Cats, before the inning closed out with Western now on top 8-2. Asheville tried to get something started after a pair of singles and a pair of outs, and they managed to get a runner on third. A single to shallow center scored the runner (8-3) but a great stop by freshman shortstop Chris Ahearn got the next hitter for the last out of the 8" inning. The Cats went three-up, three-down in the bottom of the 8". UNC-As last chance came at the top of the 9", but after two strikeouts, it had faded greatly.
