  • 24 SW ismagazin is CU aS history by slamming #1 Georgia Tech in baseball, 8-5 by Andy Gambill * WCnewsmagazine A bit of history was made on March 29", as the Catamounts upset #1 ranked Georgia Tech in baseball, 8-5. The victory was the first ever by the Catamounts over a number one ranked team in any sport. It was the first win over a top-10 team since 1998 when the Cats upset then 6" ranked Clemson. Leading the way for the Cats were pitchers Luke Miller and Brian Barnes. Miller came in relief of starter junior Bryan Tupper. Tupper gave up six hits and five runs in 3 and 2/3 innings of work, but due to the outstanding performance by both Miller and Barnes he didnt come away with a loss. The junior Miller pitched only 1 and 1/3 of an inning but | didnt allow any hits. For his efforts, Miller received the win. Relieving Miller was Barnes who pitched four shut-out innings to get the save. The senior Barnes also didnt allow any hits. : The Catamounts offense in the | monumental upset was supplied by a multitude of | players. Junior Tim Hallam came up big hitting 3 | for 4 with a walk, two RBI, and one run scored. | Freshman Nate Hall also came up big as he hit 3 for 5 on the night and had two doubles. Hall drove in three runners. Senior Jared Greenwood had a stellar performance as he had a double in the eighth inning to drive in a run. He finished with two _ RBIs on the night. : The Yellow Jackets (21-5) jumped on the - scoreboard first in the second inning with a run by Jeremy Slayden. Slayden hit a double, and _ was later driven in on a single by Whit Robbins. - Not to be outdone, WCU bounced back in the top of the third inning with two runs of their own, as sophomore Brandon Zollman and freshman Jason Haynes had back-to-back singles to start the inning. Hallam doubled two batters later to send Zollman home and Haynes to third. Greenwood then drove in Haynes with a groundout. The Yellow Jackets exhibited why they were the number one team by scoring three runs in the bottom of the third to regain the lead 4-2. Tyler Greene followed a Danny Payne walk with a bunt single to get two Yellow Jackets on base. Steven Blackwood then stepped up to the plate and hit a double to left-center field to bring home Payne. A throwing error on the play allowed Greene to come home also and put Blackwood on third. Wes Hodges drove Blackwood in on the next play with a sacrifice fly to left. The Yellow Jackets added onto their lead in the fourth inning with another run by Danny Payne. Payne hit a double to centerfield before scoring one batter later on another throwing error. This time the Catamounts answered back though. At the top of the fifth inning the Cats exploded for four runs to make it a 6-5 game. With one out on the board, the Cats went to work. Centerfielder Barrett Shaft hit a single to get on base. Then Greenwood and freshman Steven Strausbaugh had back-to-back walks. With the bases loaded, Trey McDaniel struck out but the catcher missed the ball. That allowed Shaft to score, and McDaniel to get on base. Hall then stepped up and hit a three-run double to put the Cats up 6-5. The Catamounts were not done though as they added two runs in the eighth. Senior Chris Davis started the inning with a double down the right field line. Hallam then drove in Davis with a single to center. Greenwood followed Hallam up with a double to left field that sent Hallam home and finalized the scored at 8-5. Pichre sis sei from ETSU game: WCU Wins 9-8 triple. This win was a colossal victory for the school and for the baseball program. Already one of the best programs on campus, the baseball team will no doubt benefit from the victory with some added fanfare. What has already been a great year for WCU sports, with the football teams victory over ASU and the Lady Cats SoCon Championship and trip to the NCAA tournament in basketball, just got even better with the historical 8-5 victory by the WCU men over #1 Georgia Tech.
