WCU OPI RELEASE The mens baseball team completed a series sweep of Appalachian State the weekend of March 11, 12, and 13. Western won the three contests with scores of (9-4), (14-6), and (10-9). The series sweep sets the Catamounts at 10-4 overall, and 3-0 in the Southern Conference. Saturdays contest turned out to be played on a gorgeous day, and with an even more beautiful finish. The Cats came to play early on, putting a run on the scoreboard in the first inning as Tim Hallam rounded the bases home from second on a Texas-leaguer by Chris Davis, which found itself dropping in to right- center field safely. Following one of many great diving stops in the game by third baseman Nate Hall, Appalachian would rally 2 runs on hits to the holes in right and left-center field. The top of the third would come to close with App State ahead 2-1. Scoring resumed in the bottom of the fourth. Trey McDaniel singled to start the train into motion. Following a steal by McDaniel on a loose ball, designated hitter Blake Murphy doubled to center to move McDaniel to third and himself to second. Hall would hit into a fielders choice that saw him out at first, but McDaniel scoring from third to move the score to 3-2. The top of the fifth saw App State attempting to starta rally, but afteralead Off single, catcher Jared Greenwood would catch the runner sleeping off of first and consequently threw him out from home to end the App effort. Adding to App States frustrations, Hall would make a second diving grab from the hot corner to in turn throw Out the runner at first. Western would threaten with bases loaded in the bottom of the inning, but with two outs, Western was unable to capitalize on a double, sac fly, and a pair of walks. App struck quickly in the top of the sixth as the first pitch to the first batter found itself leaving the park for a homerun. A bit of mood change was offered though later in the inning as once again, third baseman Nate Hall would lay out, this time grabbing a line drive out of the air for a quick out. The play by Hall may have been a small spark into the Catamount dug- out, but regardless of what ignited the team, the bottom of the sixth saw the Cats make some big things happen. A lead-off walk by Murphy was followed by a single by Hall that couldnt be handled, puttingrunners on first and second. It turned out not to matter which bases the Cat's runners were on, as the next batter up, Jonathan Greene would crush a ball to deep right-center for a 3-run homerun, and his first of the year. This put the Cats back on top, 5-4. Barrett Shaft would single up the middle to follow up. After a balk by App States pitcher, and a subsequent thrown away ball on an attempt to pick-off Shaft from second, Shaft would end up on third. App would recompose though, and Shaft would be stranded on third. App would knot the game at 5- 5 on a close play at the plate, barely beating a tag by Greenwood. The ensuing play left Greenwood finding some form of vengeance as he quite commandingly threw out the App State runner as he attempted to steal second. Appalachian would find another lead-off quick strike at the top of the eighth with another homerun, taking them into the lead, 6-5. After getting some runners on base, an error by Western allowed three runs to score, taking App further ahead to 9-5. As almost on cue, Nate Hall found a ball lined just far enough away that he had to lay-out for it, and would finally end the inning by completing the last out. Western didn't let a small rally by Appalachian deter them though as the Cats would open the bottom of the eighth with a pair of singles and a double by Tim Hallam to get another run in and put runners at second and third, with only one out. Second baseman, Jeremy Ellenburg, would then double over the left-fielders head for two RBI's and a stand-up double. Greenwood would strike at App State once more with a monstrous shot to deep center that landed not but a pair of feet or so from the 390ft mark on the fence. Ellenburg rounded the bases and headed home, beating the relay as he swiped the plate and tied the game up at 9-9. Appalachians chance to take a lead at the last regulation inning was short to say the least. A strikeout on the lead-off batter was followed by the for their favorite idol !! This time however, the ball would be deflected off his glove to the shortstop, who in turn fired to first for the out. Add a strikeout to complete the three outs, and Apps chance ended. Hall would make yet another mark in an already impressive showing, as he garnered a hit that took the center- fielder to the warning track to make a play on the ball, but the center-fielder slid on the dirt and hit the fence hard. Presence of mind to toss the ball to the right-fielder while he has down managed to get the ball in to stop Hall from continuing to advance, but the damage was done as he had already reached third. App would intentionally walk a pair of batters to load the bases. Didnt matter though, as Tim Hallam would bat next and loop a ball into left field near the foul line, allowing for Hall to score from third and the Cats to take the game 10-9, and sweep the three game series.
