  • 20 WCnewsmagazine by Andy Gambill WCnewsmagazine OnWednesday, the Catamount men ended what has been a disappointing season with a 69- 57 loss to Georgia Southern in the first round of the Southern Conference tournament. The loss gave Western a final record of only 8-22. The WCU men were never really close in the game and were down by as much as 19 points in the second half, when Georgia Southern pushed the score to 53-34. The closest the Catamounts even got to Georgia Southern was 9 points the Catamount men. Even with the loss of Kevin Martin to the NBA, the Catamounts boasted one of the most talented squads in the Southern Conference. With the return of shot- blocker supreme Rans Brempong, Catamount fans had high hopes for the season. The Cats have one of the best centers in the league with junior David Berghoefer and brought in what was arguably one of the most talented freshmen classes, if not the most talented freshmen class, in the Southern Conference. The Cats have plenty of talent heading into next season. David Berghoefer WCU men bow out in first round of SoCon Tournament him, and with that being said, it might not be impossible to lure him to Cullowhee for the right price. While Doherty is a dream prospect, there is no doubt that a change in the Catamount basketball program might be made somewhere and that the coach position could be the first position to be looked at. Georgia Southern broke away in the game with a 13-4 run in the middle of the first half before finishing with a 35-23 lead at halftime. Georgia Southern received good performances from a number of players including First-Team All-SoCon player Elton Nesbitt and Second-Team All- SoCon player Jean Francois. Nesbitt and Francois led the way for the Golden Eagles as Nesbitt scored 14 points and had 2 steals, while Francois scored 13 points and pulled down 8 rebounds. Louis Graham also turned in a good performance for the Golden Eagles by scoring 10 points, pulling down 6 rebounds and blocking 2 shots. The Catamounts were led by senior Rans Brempong. The Southern Conferences All-Time leader in blocked shots, Brempong finished the night with 13 points, 11 rebounds, 4 blocks and 4 steals. Freshmen Trey Hopkins and Negus McKenna also had strong games in the losing effort. Hopkins, a member of the SoConsAlll- Freshmen Team, finished the night with 11 points and Kyle Greathouse have already established themselves as _ solid veteran players in the SoCon, while freshmen Trey Hopkins, Antonio Russell, Negus McKenna and Eric Wilson flashed a lot of potential for the future. With such a talented team finishing at only 8-22 overall, the pressure is extremely high now on Coach Steve Shurina. With many Catamount fans and students calling for his firing, it will be interesting to see if he is back next year as head coach. Shurina still has one year left on his contract, and it is has been said that the contract pays him a little bit over $100,000, so the university may not be willing to swallow such a lofty sum. Shurina has had five years to turn around the basketball program, and yet with the 8-22 record this year, his overall record as coach of the Cats is now 48-97. His best season was last year when the Cats finished with a 13-15 record while having Kevin Martin, a first round pick in the NBA, on the team. Many fans are hoping that Shurina will be replaced with Rans Brempng (#13) had four blocked shots versus Georgia Southern to end his career with a SoCon record 308. photo by WCU OPI Junior David Berghoefer. photo by WCU OPI while McKenna chipped in 7 points, 7 rebounds and 2 blocks. Third-Team All-SoCon member David Berghoefer was held to only 4 points but pulled down 7 rebounds, while guard Kyle Greathouse was able contribute with 2 former UNC coach Matt Doherty. Doherty would be an excellent hire for the program, and while it may seem a bit out there that he would ever come to Cullowhee to coach, the fact is that he has Catamount Bookstore Hours Regular Store Hours Monday - Thursday 8:30am - 5:30pm Friday 8:00am - 5:000m Closed Saturday & Sunday steals off the bench. not coached anywhere The loss ended since the debacle Catamount Clothing and Gifts ; hat has been a very at UNC.
