  • 30 WCnewsmagazine by Andy Gambill * WCnewsmagazine Junior guard Teyawna Hardy stole the show with a career high 19 points off the bench, while Seniors Jennifer Gardner and Sigita Maleraite each chipped in 16 points to help the Lady Cats fend off a die-hard Wofford team 79-71 on Senior Night. Hardy finished the night with 19 points (11 in the second half) and 2 steals while going 3 for 4 from 3-pt range. Gardner finished the night with 16 points and pulled down 10 rebounds while only playing 20 minutes due to foul trouble. Maleraite pulled 8 rebounds to go with her 16 points as she hit four three pointers in the game. Also having strong games for the Lady Cats were Seniors Ki-kKi Glass and Lori Tanner, and Freshmen Jessika Johnson, Monique Dawson, and Chevon Keith. Glass displayed superb leadership from the point guard position by dishing out 6 assists and grabbing 2 steals on defense. Tanner displayed a hard-nosed, physical effort down low in grabbing 6 rebounds and scoring _ 8 points. Johnson, Dawson, and Keith all had critical contributions off the bench for Western. Johnson finished the night with 6 points and 6 rebounds off the bench in only 15 minutes of playing time, while Dawson played tough defense on the Terriers by garnering 3 steals in only 9 minutes of action. Keith played superbly off the bench as well by scoring 7 points and pulling down 9 rebounds. With all of the solid play by the Lady Cats (14-12 overall, 10-9 in conference play) they were able to win their fifth straight game, and have won six out of their last seven games. For the Terriers it was a balanced attack that almost pulled off the comeback. The Terriers had five players in double digits led by starting guard Ricaye Harris who had 17 points, 8 assists, 6 rebounds, and 2 steals on the night. Also scoring in double digits for the Terriers were starting forwards Nakia Mister and Stephanie Ripberger, starting guard Mary Jo Yee, and bench player Brie Bradshaw. Mister finished the night with 16 points and 2 steals while Ripberger chipped in 12 points and 3 blocks. Jo Yee also played strong for Wofford scoring 12 points, dishing out 6 assists, and coming up with 4 steals, while Bradshaw provided a boost off the bench by scoring 10 points. The loss pushed Wofford to 4-22 overall, and only 2-17 in conference play. The Lady Cats opened the game by allowing Wofford to jump out to an 8-5 lead and seemed a bit out of sync due to the emotions and pressures of Senior Night. After a timeout though, the Lady Cats cut the lead to 16-14 by the 11:00 mark, and from that point on went on a 27-9 run to close out the first half. Using a smothering, trapping, high pressure defense the Lady Cats forced Wofford into a lot of turnover (25 in the game) and converted the turnovers into easy baskets. After leading 41-25 at halftime, the Lady Cats came out in the second half flat and allowed the Terriers to go on a 14-5 run to start off the half. With the lead cut from 16 points down to 7 points, the Cats started to play hard again and outscored the Terriers 10-9 over the next five minutes. Bu the Lady Cats suffered another mental lapse and allowed Wofford to go ona 10-5 run to cut the lead to 60-58 with 7:44 left in the game. Then the time finally came when Wofford would get the lead back as Stephanie Ripberger hit a spot-up three pointer to take the lead at 63-62 with 5:57 left. The Lady Cats were determined not to lose on Senior night though and outscored the Terriers 17-8 to close out the game and grab the win for Seniors Jennifer Gardner, Lori Tanner, Ki-Ki Glass, Sigita Maleraite, and Shaketia Barnes. Although it is the last home game for the Lady Cats seniors they still have to travel to Boone on Thursday, February 24" to play Appalachian State in the final regular-season game of the year. Wofford will also travel for their final regular season game on Saturday, February 26" against UNCG. The Southern Conference tournament will start on March 2 in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The Lady Cats are tied with the College of Charleston, Georgia Southern, and UNCG for the fourth spot at 10-9 in conference play heading into the final game of the regular season.
