  • WCU student, Jenna Mills, interns at NASA by Jennifer Scism * WCnewsmagazine Some_ internships and _ cooperative educational experiences are boring. College students around the globe apply for the positions to get experience in the fie!d they desire to go into after they complete their secondary education. In a lot of cases, students end up sitting behind a desk answering the telephone and doing basic secretarial jobs, when what they really wantis togo 4 out and firsthand experience in the job. * After all, it is this experience that they signed up for, and its this experience that will aid them in their overall knowledge about the possibilities and limitations of the field. One student here at Western did just that. Jenna Mills, a native of Waynesville, North Carolina, participated in a cooperative educational program and an internship at NASA. Last May, Jenna traveled to Houston, Texas and began working in the education department for NASA. In the education department she actually got firsthand experience with her line of work: communications. Jenna felt that it was very important to take part in a program that allowed her to use her skills that she had been taught in her major. Jenna is a communications major with a concentration in electronic media and public relations. She marketed educational videos called NASA Brain Bites. These videos were geared towards middle and high school students to answer their queries about space and NASA in general. By contacting teachers, science centers and PBS stations, Jenna was able to practice her skills in public relations. She also helped organize programs that were presented at elementary, middle and high schools. These programs were created to help encourage students to become interested in science and math studies. Astronauts and activities were brought to the students. Jenna stated that they were very excited to see an astronaut and that the programs were really effective because it got the kids excited about exploring science and math at an earlier age. Jenna thought that it was funny when one elementary student stated that he wanted to do something that would make a lot of money. When the astronaut told the child how much he made, he was convinced that he, too, was going to be an astronaut. A few months after Jenna had been in Houston, switched and she departments began working for the office of Public Affairs at NASA. Her main project that dealt with her public relations skills was when Jenna was in charge of putting together press kits for the media in the surrounding area. These were briefing kits for NASA officials who were going to school. She was also in charge of contacting the media to get interviews for events. She also put together press releases for cooperative educationalstudents who were sent to Dance with Lorraine Buchanan Carla Batchelor * WCnewsmagazine their home town newspaper, radio and television station. She stated that it was weird doing her own press release. Jenna also wrote feature stories for Space Roundup, an internal NASA publication and an Internet-based publication. While opportunities like NASA may seem farfetched and not probable, there are many internships and cooperative educational programs out there for college students to take advantage of. The one thing that Jenna said was important when choosing what internship to apply for is, Whether its paid or unpaid, research the internships. Active participation is what is important. = Photo by WCU OPI Lorraine Buchanan is a local singer and songwriter from Waynesville, NC. Her music is soothing and relaxing, while falling into a category all in its own. Her music has a mix of that mountain twang we all have all come to know, as well as those soft pop sounds made so popular by artists like John Mayer and The Counting Crows. Her first CD is entitled Dance With You, which includes six diverse sounding tracks. All of the songs are good for reflection, and any CD which allows for reflection is always a good one to have on hand while driving or just sitting around on a rainy day. Leaving is track number four on the CD. This song has the prettiest melody, and she does the best harmonizing with the guitar she has on hand. This song is directly about heartbreak brought upon by a man. In this song she is learning about letting someone go to follow their dreams; she knows she should let him go, yet it is so hard to let the one you love go. My personal favorite song on Dance With You was track number five, which is titled Carry Me. This song is about finding that comfort we all yearn for. In this song she is looking for someone to help her find the comforts of home and to comfort her throughout her life. She does not specifically mention the need for a man, so the person who she needs to help her can be left up to any friend or family member, as well as a man. This is a good debut album, and | give two thumbs up to Lorraine. She currently has a website on which she has information about future appearances, photos and CD information. On the website you can find out where to pick your own copy of the CD, so log on to the web and get more information about this up-and-coming artist.
