  • Hockey team has no place to practice, leaves team benched by Angela Weinkle * WCnewsmagazine The auxiliary gyms in the second floor of Reid are causing more problems than theyre worth. Westerns club hockey team is suffering because of the trouble. The floors are old and are being marked up due to the skates, volleyball nets, golf clubs and other sporting events that are also being held in those gyms. The hockey team has been asked to stop practicing in the gyms because of the damage. That presents a problem for the nationally ranked club team. They have no place to practice. The fact that we don't have a place to practice is hurting us, said Sten Taube. We're getting out of shape. The hockey team has been affiliated with the schools club sports for the past three years, and it has never been a problem for them to practice in the gyms. This is not a reflection of the club, said Debbie Schwartz, the head of the intramural sports department. The Reid Gym administration and facility management are trying to help the team find a place to practice. Fortunately the teams members are not giving up. They are three wins under .500 and want to reach that goal. The team has been advised to write a proposal for the Sports Council and bring it to their attention that there is a solution that can help more than just the hockey team. Sport Court is a type of floor that is made in tiles. This floor will benefit more than just the hockey team. It is very versatile. The floor would be used for basketball and volleyball. The hockey team has taken it upon themselves to talk to the Sport Court company and try to work something out. Sport Court is willing to make a deal with the school to help out Reid gym and the schools budget. The floor will be tiled so that if one gets ruined, it will be easier and cheaper to fix. It is also softer on the athletes legs and knees. Team members are also helping raise the money for the floor. They have sponsors, which branch out as far as Ohio and private donations. Along with the donations for the floor, they are also helping with the teams dues. The hockey team has to pay over $600 out of its own pocket for travel, food and any other expenses. The hockey team has also been very involved in the community and the campus. It held the Halloween Carnival for Westerns rugby players destroy UGA by Angela Weinkle * WCnewsmagazine WCnewsmagazine 19 the faculty and their children. Despite popular belief, WCU does have a hockey team, and the players are helping the campus in more ways than one. So, with Sport Court, more than just one team and athletic group will benefit from it, and the Western Carolina club hockey team can grow. Photos by: Angela Weinkle Western is known for many things, and one of the most popular is its club sports. One of the most popular club sports on WCUs campus is rugby. Jan. 22, Western took on the UGA Bulldogs and dominated 22-0. The UGA team took a nice beating. They said that we ran them into the ground, said the rugby coach Rex Wolfe. It was an entire group effort. The team is in agreement; you can't win two without winning one. As far as the rest of the season iS concerned, the Western team is the hardest hitting team in the league. The team also has players that can handle the ball well. And the rookies are making their mark. Two rookies scored against UGA. The team is expecting to win the Southern Division. Anything else would be a disappointment. Unfortunately, their coach is leaving for Australia in less than two weeks. When | leave, they'll be the young and Rexless, Coach Rex said. The team will then be coached by themselves and will play in honor of Rex. The harder we hit, the better he feels, said David Carolina McRell. Rugby is not just about hitting, its about true teamwork. We have team spirit, rookie Jack Cheng said. We play together; we win together. Lacrosse teams need you by Angela Weinkle * WCnewsmagazine Lacrosse is a northern sport with some of its best players from Boston, Maine and New York, but its slowly making its presence heard in the south, with great collegiate teams at UNC, Duke, Syracuse, Navy and now WCU. Western's club teams spread into all sports. One of the newest club sports is lacrosse. Lacrosse is based in the north, and came down to the south. Western has both a womens and a mens team. Both teams practice four days a week and compete against other _ universities. Some of the schools include Elon and _ Duke. If you are interested in Blaying, then stop by _ aid be Reid Gym Mc ar
