Hurricane Ivan cant deter Cross Country by Ryan Fussell On Saturday, Sept. 18, in the wake of Hurricane Ivan, the Catamount mens and womens Cross Country teams ran in their second race of the sea- son. The teams left midday on Friday and managed to avoid Ivan en route to Clemson University; how- ever, those who wished to attend the races were limited by the imposed curfew and road closings due to the impending storm. Despite a few muddy places on Clemsons golf course, the staging area for the race, everything went off without a hitch with surprisingly good weather. Clemson dominated the race by being repre- sented with seven of the top eight finishers. This gave Clemson a very low team score after adding the places of their top five finishers. It was West- ern Carolinas own Adam Puett who was able to disrupt the Clemson Tigers and finish among their pack with forth place in the 8000m (5 miles) with a time of 25:22 against a field of 77 runners. This per- formance garnered Puett honors as the Southern Conference Runner of the Week. This is the sec- ond week in a row that Puett has earned the honor after his performance at the Western Carolina/Pa- pas Pizza To Go invitational held earlier this month (see previous edition of the WC for results). Also, freshman Fredrick Cameron had a strong second race performance. Cameron finished second for the Catamounts (15th, 26:14). Rounding out the top five and scoring team for Western were senior James at Baytree Classic WCU OPI RELEASE WCU Womens Golf Finishes Sixth Irwin (24th, 27:00), sophomore Chris Lynch (27th, 27:26), and freshman Brian McLean (29th, 27:31). The mens team finished forth out of nine teams, only one point behind third place Emory University (one point is the equivalence of one runner plac- ing ahead of one Catamount in the final scoring). Sophomore Chris Lynch commented, We went out pretty well together. A few people fell off of the pace, but it was a lot of the guys first ever 8000m race. We didnt run like we wanted to but with these next couple of weeks of training, we should be able to get together and be better. The Lady Catamounts were also not swayed by lvans aftermath as they also claimed a forth place finish in a field of 11 teams, with a total of 95 run- ners in the race. In the womens 5000m Deanna Kulesz was the top finisher for Western Carolina in a sixth place finish with 18:50. The womens team was rounded out by senior Tonya Edmonds (21st, 19:52), freshman Elizabeth Privette with a new per- sonal record of 19:57 (23rd), freshman Kerrie Sav- ery (32nd, 20:22), and senior Leslie Martin (50th, 21:14). The womens team finished in team rank- ings ahead of SoCon conference member schools UNC-Greensboro and Georgia Southern. Senior Tonya Edmonds seemed to have a good outlook for this years team: Im excited about the team. We are really young, but have a lot of talent. Its just go- ing to be important for us to stay in a pack, run tight, WCnewsmagazine 21 and finish hard. | believe in my girls and know they are going to do great. Be sure to look for the Catamounts in their next competition on October 9 at Furman University in Greenville, SC, and if possible, make the trip with some friends to support your team. WCU Mens Golf Places 10th of 22 at Elon/Sea Trail Intercollegiate WCU OPI RELEASE The Western Carolina womens golf team fired a 306 and finished with a three-day total of 914 to place sixth in the 17-team field at the Unlimited Potential/Baytree Classic, played at Baytree Golf Plantation. The 914 by the Catamounts ranks as the fifth-best, 54-hole score in school history and the teams best 54-hole score since carding an 897 in last falls Lady Pirate Invitational. Junior Ashley Hovda bounced back from a second-round 77 to card a 75 on day three to tie for ninth with a three-round score of 225. The 225 was Hovda's career best for a 54-hole event and ties for the seventh-best, 54- hole score in WCU history. Brandy Andersen also made significant strides in round three. After a solid 74 in round one, the junior fired an 81 on day two. She redeemed herself with a one-over 73 on day three for a three-round total of 228 and a tie for 15th. Bianca Melone just missed her third career top 20 finish, tying for 21st with a total of 231. Freshmen Kandy Carland and Lucinda Davies rounded out the WCU five-some with scores of 235 (39th-t) and 236 (42nd-t), respectively. UNC Wilmington fired a 288 on day three to win the event with a three- day total of 891. Coastal Carolina was second with am 898, followed by East Tennessee State (908), Middle Tennessee State (911) and College of Charleston (913). The Western Carolina womens golf team will stay on the road to play in the University of Kentucky/Wildcat Fall invitational this weekend (Oct. 1-3). The Western Carolina mens golf team carded a two-day total of 605 (302-303) to place 10th in the 22-team field of the annual Elon/Sea Trail In- tercollegiate, played on the Rees Jones Course in Sunset Beach, N.C., this weekend. Western Carolina was led by its underclassmen as Matt Dowdy (James- town, N.C.) and sophomore Tripp Morrow (Forest City, N.C.) carded rounds of 150 and 151, respectively. Dowdy, playing in his first collegiate event, ended the two days tied for 28th, while Morrow tied for 34th. Juniors Blake Wray (154/48th-t), Chase Kress (155/56th-t) and Keith Tyburski (156/65th-t) round- ed out the Catamounts scoring. On the strength of a 288 on day one, Rutgers won the two-day event with a score of 579. The Scarlet Knights were followed by George Mason (580), Samford (581), Jacksonville (591) and host team Elon (597). The Western Carolina mens golf team will take next weekend off before returning to action Oct. 7-10 at Winthrops Mission Inn Intercollegiate, played in Orlandos Mission Inn Resort
