  • 20 WCnewsmagazine Intramurals begin in swinging fashion by Ryan Fussell Well, its that time again, when students from near and, well, near battle it out through different sport mediums to find out exactly who is the best on campus. No one will admit it, but beyond bragging rights and trying to stay physically fit to show off to that ex who you have back home, most people are really playing for the T-shirts and shorts that glare Intramural Champion on them. Regardless of what it is that you are into, its safe to say that if you keep up with the intramural postings around campus, you are bound to find something that you'd like to do or be a part of. The intramural office inside Reid Gym has complete listings of the winners of each contest and a running score of some of the teams that compete year- long to see who has the best group on campus and yield that years rights as the Intramural Grand Team Champions. This goes the same for the sorority and fraternity leagues where pure pride is on the line in constant grudge matches. So far this year, tennis has been the first sport to have crowned its winners and distribute its respective loot, but several other sports have begun to start play. The softball fields across from the Ramsey Center are getting lots of use, as games are beginning to be played. These fields may soon be overshadowed by their neighbors, the football fields. Ultimate Frisbee will soon begin action, and what seems to be the granddaddy of all first-semester sports, flag football, will dominate as the spectator event and drama on campus. Trash talking, while disallowed on the fields, will be everywhere you walk or sit for more than five STANDINGS Based on overall score WOMENs League MENs League Independent National Independent 1.Light Urple 3345 1.Red Kool Aid 1760 2.Helder Hotties2230 2.Team Fresh 1660 3.BSU 1454 3.WCU Rugby 1180 4.Outkasts 270 4.Bentonites 810 5.Purple Prokrinds 710 Sorority 6.Kappa Sigma B 620 1.Alpha Xi Delta5180 7.Tall Cans 535 2.Phi Mu 4210 8.Bootleggers 530 3.Alpha Chi Omega 3765 4.Delta Zeta 1475 American Independent 5.Alpha Gam 1430 1.The Skulls 1425 2.Skulls B 900 3.Linem-Up 825 4.SMC 450 5.The Order 450 6.Hooterville Express 350 Whats the story Fraternity to your Crazy 1.Kappa Sig 2235 9 2.Pikes 1590 Team Name? te be a 4.BSU 1240 Email us at 5.Sigma Chi 1240 6.Delta Sig 850 wc@wcu.edu 7.Sigma Alpha Epsilon 215 minutes. Some of the perennial favorites, such as SMC (the Smokey Mountain Conference), the Black Knights, the Tall Cans, or a spectator favorite, the Work- ing Class (Professors, grad students, and anyone else out in the real world), will be all be in action this year. Sure to come are the newcomers waiting for their chance to make their mark in flag football history; this years talk is over the 212. Whether you want to see an intra-dorm game, you want to see one played between Hooterville and the Bentonites or you want to represent your favorite team, be sure to find your way down to the fields during the evenings to see what is up. Don't forget though, if you aren't planning on getting in action, be sure to go support a friend at a game and see what its all about. Cheering helps burn calories, too! This marks this second meet- ing between WCU and ECU, with the Catamount win evening the series record between the two teams at one a piece. After battling to a scoreless tie after one half of play, the Cats capitalized on increased offensive pressure in the second half. Freshman forward Lauren Atkinson beat a Pirate defender and goalkeep Lindsi Troxler at the top of the box and found the back of the net just seven minutes into the second half to give the Catamounts a 1-0 lead. The goal was Atkinsons first in her collegiate career. . Late in the second half sophomore Stephanie Svoboda drove the ball down into Pirate territory, past two defenders, before dishing off to Atkinson. The fresh- man forward then crossed the ball back to Svoboda for Westerns second goal of the game, and Svobodas team-high third on the season. The Catamounts outshot the Pirates 13-6, with freshman Heather Dittmer leading the way with three. Svoboda, Atkinson, and Megan Chambers each added a pair as well. ; This was a great end to our weekend, Head Coach Debbie Hensley said. We created scoring opportunities and then executed on them. | am looking for- ward to us carrying this momentum into our conference play. WCU returns to action this Friday, Oct. 1 against Elon in Southern Confer- ence play. The match time is set to begin at 4:00 pm at Schrader Field.
