Check out the Cat Center by Jennifer Scism | Wenewsmagazine There are numerous free services that are offered to the student body, on campus. From free health services in the infirmary, to free counseling and support groups, you name it, Western oni it. Another service that is free, yet often neglected, is the Catamount Academic Tutoring enter. The Cat Center is an organization that has had a tremendous affect on the students who have utilized its services. Arecent study organized by the Director of the Cat Center, Chesney Reich, shows that students who use the tutoring services on a regular basis have an average GPA of 3.0 or better. With these stats, who can't afford to attend tutoring sessions? The Cat Center offers tutoring in most 100 and 200 level courses. Most of the courses are included in the liberal studies program. The only subjects the Cat Center does not offer tutoring in are Math and English courses, but don't fret. Students can receive help for those courses on campus as well, through the Math Lab and the Writing Center. What is the best part about the Cat Center? It's free! After all, the average private tutor charges 20 dollars per hour for tutoring. The tutors are students who show great academic standing and have taken the courses before and performed well in them. The University gives them a paycheck so you dont have to. You are paying A LOT of money to get a degree from Western. Don't you think you should yank them for free tutoring? The Cat Center is currently located on the second floor of the Graham Building, on the hill, adjacent to the Health Center. However, when the Killian Annex construction is completed, the Cat Center will move back down the hill. The Cat Center should be moved into the Killian Annex by the beginning of the spring semester. All the students are required to do is call the Cat Center and set up an appointment time. Students must call 48 hours in advance to receive tutoring. The Cat Center also offers workshops for the campus population. Students can come and learn their personal learning style, learn Time Management and Study Skills, and much more. For all you people who want to enter the Nursing program here at Western, the Cat Center offers Verbal SAT prep. All Nursing students have to retake the verbal section of their SATs to be considered for the program. To contact the Catamount Academic Tutoring Center for group study sessions, private study sessions, test reviews, weekly tutoring, or workshop opportunities call: 227-2273 or 227-2274 (Chesney Reich, Director) Or stop by the tutoring center on the second floor of the Graham Building. Also, remember that the request for the appointment must be made 48 hours in advance.
