  • eR eer ne a oo Ae OE Oe OT eT Oe ee ee Jessica Jarrard) WCnewsmagazine Universities encourage free thinking and intellectual growth, which is why it is no surprise that universities are the prime place for political involvement. Sadly, the 18-25 age bracket has the lowest voter turnout percentages. It is time our generation gets off the couch and gets involved! _ Voting is the simplest form of political involvement, yet for some reason, few actually use their right to vote. __ When the United States entered World War Il in 1940, the slogan heard across the country was old enough to fight, old enough tovote. Yes, thats right, eighteen-year-olds were drafted left and right without the right to vote. While they were old enough to fight in a foreign country and die for their country, they did not have the right to vote on the administration that sent them around the world fighting for a cause. This angered not only young people called to serve, but citizens of all ages. In the 1960s, eighteen-year-olds still did not have the right to vote. With the conflict in Vietnam, protesters 18-21 took to the streets demanding the right to vote, as many were called to fight in a war in which they had no political voice. Nearly fifty resolutions to the amendment were written in 1969, and not a single one passed. It was not until nearly thirty years later, in 1970, the Supreme Court case Oregon vs. Mitchell said Congress could grant eighteen-year-olds the right to vote. Justice Black wrote the majority opinion. Thus the 26" Amendment was born in 1971. It granted eighteen-year-olds the right to vote in national elections. The voting age for state elections was regulated by each individual state. The ratification of this Amendment only took four short months, which is the fastest of any Constitutional Amendment in our history. This speedy passage is accredited to the outstanding number of peaceful protests and letters sent by young people. __ _ Once the 26" Amendment passed, voter turnout among young people increased. This increase was short-lived. The highest _ voting rate for those between the ages of 18-25 was the 1992 election between George Bush and Bill Clinton. With Bill Clinton having a generous number of votes from voters 18-25, he was able to defeat George Bush. Since then, voter turnout from 18-25 has drastically decreased. in the 1996 election, only 30% of eligible 18-25 year old voters actually went to the polls to vote. Once again it is an election year. As we learned in 2000, every vote does count. i i actually make it to the polls on election day and VOTE! a Oe - Studies show the reason adults our age tend to not vote is because of their toward politics i ; ; are unsure of how to register, where to vote once they are registered \widive Oo tee: along laa reyes Well, have I got good news for you!
