SUGARBERRY leaves usually have unequal bases, as do most other trees in the elm family. These are widest near the base, and taper to a sharp point. The flowers are small, the fruit also small and yellow to red. The tree is not common in the Park, but may be found along some streams at low elevations. RED MULBERRY leaves are broad, dark green above, whitish and hairy below, and sometimes lobed. The flowers are tiny, and clustered in short, hanging spikes. The fruit is reddish to purple, highly edible, relished by wildlife and humans. The tree is almost rare in the Park, found only below 2,200 feet. WHITE BASSWOOD leaves are smooth, dark green above, and coated on the underside with white to light brown hairs. Both the flowers and the fruit are hung from a modified leaf. Nearly every mature tree has suckers growing about the base. The tree is fairly common below 5,000 feet. SOURWOOD leaves are shiny, almost bronzy, in youth, and a smooth soft green when mature, turning red in the fall. The flowers are small and numerous, on thin, branching stems at the ends of the twigs. The fruit is a capsule. This small tree is abundant to 4,500 feet, and rare to about 5,600. MOUNTAIN SILVERBELL leaves are soft, dark green above and lighter below, and furnished with a few small teeth. The flowers are white, four-petaled and bell-shaped, and very numerous in early spring. The fruit is four-sided and pointed. The bark is thick and reddish-brown, half-inch scales 'often with a purplish cast. This is one of the larger forest trees, despite the delicate sound of the name, and may be found from the lower elevations in the Park to 5,000 feet. BLACK WILLOW leaves are the most slender, in relation to length, of any tree leaves in the Park. They are light green and soft, and turn yellow in autumn. The male and female catkins are borne on different trees. The bark is almost black, divided into winding ridges, often flaking. The tree grows along streams up to about 5,000 feet. Four smaller willows also occur here. WITCH HAZEL leaves have irregular margins, scalloped rather than toothed, and widest near the tip end. The flowers appear in the late fall, and are yellow. The fruit is a capsule that may remain on the tree for a year. Ordinarily a shrub, in the Southern Appalachians witch hazel may become a tree 25 feet tall. It grows from low altitudes to about 5,000 feet. 27
