  • Pa 10 WiC vrensmacazine Sunshine Boys Brings Summer Theatre Success by Jennifer Wilkey | WCnewsmagazine The Western Carolina Stage Company presented Neil Simons Broadway hit The Sunshine Boys as part of their second summer theater season, on Friday, June 25. The Sunshine Boys is a story about the attempted reunion of a once-legendary comedic act. Before the advent of television, Willie Lewis and Al Clark were a famous vaudeville duo known as Lewis & Clark. Now theyre in retirement, cantankerous, and old. At the behest of Willy's agent and nephew, Ben, the duo are asked to appear in an ABC television special called The Golden Age of Vaudeville and do an encore performance of their most famous bit. The only problem is the two comedians cant stand each other; they haven't spoken since their break-up twenty years earlier. Based on a pair of real vaudeville performers who barely spoke to each other offstage, The Sunshine Boys is a very funny play with a heartwarming ending. The story of the original odd couple is a hilarious comic undertaking thats also a touching story of friendship and the bonds of long partnerships, said director Claire Eye, lecturer in Westerns communication, theatre and dance department. Simons ear for dialogue and eye for observation of behavior is as good here as anything hes done. For most lovers of comedy, The Sunshine Boys is a must-see. The cast includes seasoned actor Stephen Ayers as Willy Clark. Ayers is the creator and artistic director of the Western Carolina Stage Company, and has numerous film and television credits in addition to acting with and directing the University Players and WCSC. Al Lewis is played by Joshua Cox, a WCU alumni and veteran of the University Theatre who currently lives and works in Los Angeles. Other cast members include WCU theater students Izzy Burger, Heather Lovette and Michael Wannagot, as well as WCU graduates Sabrina Frantz and Josh Ellis. There will be six evening performances of The Sunshine Boys, at 7:30 pm on June 25, 26 and 30 and July 1-3. There will be four matinee shows, beginning at 2:00 pm, on June 26 and 27 as well as July 3 and 4. All shows will be held in Niggli Theatre in the Stillwell Building on the WCU campus. Tickets prices are $15 for adults, $12.50 for seniors and students. Season tickets are also available.
