  • WiC rrewsmagazine 9 , me TDOORS Mountain biking is quite popular around WNC, as trails are everywhere. Tsali, located in Pisgah National Forest is a popular hangout among biking students. Be sure to read and follow all guidelines set up by the park, as mountain biking and horse back riding trails require a usage fee. Also, certain trails are opened certain days for biking, and other days for horseback riding. Located just 15 miles west of Bryson City, this 42 mile labyrinth of trails proves to be a challenge for for the expert and the novice alike. Fishing is also a great activity for those who want some water action. Rivers are in abundance around here, as the Tuck is never far away. Fly fishing is growing in popularity among fishermen. Those who dont wish to stand knee deep in icy waters can fish from the comfort of a boat or canoe. Make sure you obey all hunting and fishing laws when fishing, and that you have the proper licenses before embarking on a trip. North Carolina licenses are required if you fish within the Great Smoky National Park. If you fish in Cherokee you are required to purchase a tribal permit which usually costs around $7 a ho day. Fishing permits range anywhere from $10-$30 depending on how long you wish for the permit to be valid. Has the summer heat got you so worn out? Jump into a refreshing mountain lake to cool off, or wade in the Tuckasegee River. Wolf Lake is located a mere thirty minutes from campus and proves to be quite popular among students. There are cliffs on. the lake that students have been spotted jumping off of, and a rope swing located on the backside of the lake at the end of the road. To get to Wolf Lake take 107 S until you get to 281. Hwy 281 takes you right over the lake twenty minutes down the road. Looking for something closer? East Laporte has access to the Tuck right in the park. There are parts that are deep enough for swimming. Tubing is a cheap way to have a little funin # the sun and take a scenic trip down the cool river. To get the the park, go out of campus and take a left on 107 S. It is located right across the street from Caney Fork Rd. Places like Deep Creek are good for tubing, as you can rent a tube for a small fee. To 5 get to Deep Creek, take Hwy 74 toward Bryson City and take exit 67 and go north on Veterans Blvd. Turn right on Main Street, then left on Everett St. Then a right on Depot street, then at the end of the road a left on Ramseur, and finally an immediate right on Deep Creek Rd. Go half a , mile and bear left on the bridge and you will see the tubing company. The directions sound complicated, but the roads are well marked and prove to be much easier than they sound. Little Sliding Rock, Sliding Rock, and Turtleback Falls are fun places for those who wish to swim for relatively cheap. Make sure to obey all rules, and pay all entry and parking fees by following signs posted in the areas. To get to Sliding Rock from Cashiers, go past the Hwy 64 | intersection on 107 S for 1.9 miles and turn right on Whiteside Cove Road and drive for 2.8 ; miles. After the bridge, park in the dirt on the right, and Little Sliding Rock is 100 yrds up the trail. Sliding Rock is located in Pisgah National Forest on Hwy 276, and requires a $2 parking fee. Turtleback Falls is located off 281 S. right passed Rainbow Falls signs. Park on the right, cross the road, and enter the woods at the old jeep and descend the trail for about a mile. Not in the mood for swimming, but definitely want some time on the water? Canoeing and rafting are great options. Canoeing is quite fun on lakes, as Glenville Lake (located right off 107S) and Wolf Lake are close enough for day in the boat. Rafting down the river is also an option. Even those who don't have their own boats can still raft. Rafting companies are set up all along the Tuck heading down Hwy 441 toward Cherokee, so get a group together, and sign { up for a tour! The next time someone in Cullowhee looks at you and says Theres nothing to do here! just tell them, there certainly is, if you know where to look
