  • WESTERN CAROLINIAN NEWS April 26, 2000 April 18 In District Court in Sylva, a male non- student charged with firing a rifle at the Ramsey Center and breaking nine glass panels pled guilty. He was placed on probation for five years, ordered to pay full restitution and court costs at the direction of his probation officer, and ordered not to be on the WCU campus for five years. A male student charged with possession of marijuana and possession of a weapon (a paint ball gun) on campus pled guilty in District Court and was placed on supervised probation for one year, fined $90.00 and costs. Prayer for judgement was continued on the weapons charge. Charges against a female student for simple assault brought in connection with an incident which occurred in Walker Hall on February 28 were dismissed as the case was successfully mediated. A male student charged with possession of a weapon on campus (a wooden club with nails in the end) was granted a deferred prosecution for one year. At 9:00 a. m., Housekeeping staff reported that someone had placed a bag of cow manure in the east stairwell of Scott Hall. In connection with the arrest of a male on 4/17 in Scott for stalking, trespassing, and resisting arrest, bond was revoked on two prior arrests and his bond was increased to $13,000. He remains in jail. At 10:00 a. m., officers assisted a male student who had failed to appear in court and had an order for arrest pending. Officers transported the subject to court where the order was rescinded. At 11:30 a. m., officers counseled a member of the faculty about a warrant pending in Buncombe County for issuing a worthless check. CORRECTION In last week's coverage of Greek Week, the "Overall Greek Winners" on page 3 were incorrect in the Results table. Actual results were as follows: l.AHA l.KA 2. AZ 2.10>E 3. <DM 3. riKO Please excuse the error. At 8:39 p. m., officers impounded a vehicle which was parked in handicapped space at Helder. At 12:05 p m., staff at the juvenile treatment program at Killian Annex reported problems with a juvenile who had become violent. Officers assured that the situation was settled and file a report for Juvenile Services. At 8:18 p. m., officers discovered a dog in a room on the 3rd floor of Walker. Further investigation revealed some stolen signs and alcohol paraphernalia. The incidents were referred to Housing. At 1:10 a. m., a student worker reported that a parking sign on Belk Drive had been knocked down. April 19 At 8:05 a. m., a staff member in Killian Annex reported a strange voice mail message. Officers checked the room in Harrill where the call originated and found that one resident was drunk and passed out. WCU EMS was called to assure that the subject was okay. He was revived and refused transport. At 3:32 p. m., a student reported that a cd player was stolen from her vehicle while it was parked near the Bookstore. At 3:45 p. m., officers investigated a traffic accident in the Reid lot where a large delivery truck got hung between vehicles and struck two. At 4:05 p. m., a search warrant was executed in a room on the 5th floor of Scott Hall. A small amount of marijuana and paraphernalia was found. Charges are pending. At 4:30 p. m., officers counseled and released a male student on the fifth floor of Scott for disorderly conduct. The incident is referred to Housing. At 11:40 p. m., officers impounded a vehicle for parking on campus after privileges were revoked. At 2:42 a. m., officers responded to a report of a fight on the ground floor of Albright and sent three students to their rooms. April 20-23 At 1:20 a. m. on 4/20, officers assisted a coach in getting back into her office at the Ramsey Center after she was locked out. At 9:10 a. m. on 4/20, a student in Robertson reported that she had received a harassing phone call from a male student. The male student was identified and counseled by police. At 11:00 a. m. on 4/20, officers stored two bicycles found unsecured at Scott. It is believed that the bicycles were left by persons who stole two better bicycles. At 1:55 p. m. on 4/20, a student reported that her car was missing from Reynolds. Officers found the vehicle in the Walker A lot. At 5:38 p. m. on 4/22, a student in Walker reported that someone had entered his room while he was sleeping and stolen his backpack which contained approximately $130 worth of property between 11:00 p. m. on 4/19 and 2:00 a. m. on 4/20. At 7:16 a. m. on 4/23, officers found a car door open in front of Scott and attempted to contact the owner. Pikes Peak Beach Volleyball Tournament Pi Kappa Alpha will hold its first annual beach volleyball tournament on Saturday, April 29 at the house volleyball court. All entries are welcome, with teams consisting of four to five members playing a four-on-four game. Entry fees are $ 15 per team if entered before April 23; all other entries will be $20. Prizes from O'Malleys and Thunder Ridge will be awarded in each division. T-shirts and concessions will also be available. Red Cross CPR and First Aid Classes The Jackson County chapter of the American Red Cross will be holding Community First Aid and CPR classes on May 19 and 20, and also on May 25 and 26. Decriminalizing Child Abandonment Petitions will soon be circulated supporting a bill to decriminalize child abandonment that would allow mothers to abandon their babies in designated places specified by law, without fear of prosecution. Rugby to Hold Annual Co-Ed Game The WCU Ruggers will be hosting their annual co-ed rugby game on May 6, at a time to be announced. The co-ed game is a chance for anyone (male or female) to come out and play a game of rugby . For those interested, there will be two rugby clinics. The first will be on Tuesday, May 1, from 4-5:30 and the second will be on Thursday, May 3, from 4- 5:30. The clinics will be held on the intramural field behind the bookstore and will cover the basics of the game. These clinics are also for anyone interested in playing next season. Soccer Field Dedication Ceremony A dedication ceremony will be held for the new WCU soccer field on Saturday, April 29, at 2pm. The dedication of Charles W. On Campus Exhibits •A ceramics exhibition, "Recent Works," by Jeanee Redmond is ongoing through May 13 at the Chelsea Gallery in the UC. •The annual Student Art Exhibition will run through May 10 at the Belk Gallery. •Original quilts and barn photos are on display in an exhibit entitled "The Old Barn" through June 30 at the Mountain Heritage Center.
