  • Student Tapped for Prestigious CS Mentorship Program A WCU student is one of 40 women from across the nation selected for participation in a prestigious summer mentorship program designed to increase the number of women entering graduate school in computer science or computer engineering. Valerie Gartland, a junior computer science major, will be working for 10 weeks this summer with Lori Clarke, co- director of the Laboratory for Advanced Software Engineering Research at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. This is an incredible opportunity for Valerie to work alongside a world-class leader in the field of software testing and analysis, said David Luginbuhl, associate professor of mathematics and computer science at WCU. The Computing Research Associations Distributed Mentorship Program brings together undergraduate students and professors for a summer of research at the mentors research institution, Participating students are directly involved in research activities, meet and interact with graduate students and professors, and work with successful researchers. in addition to the 10-week educational experience, Gartland also receives a $6,000 stipend for the summer program. At WCU, Gartland is a deans list student, evening tutor in the computer science laboratory and student assistant in introductory-level courses. She is a 2002 graduate of Raleigh Charter High School and is the daughter of J.P. and Laurie Gartland of Raleigh. Gartland is the second woman from WCUs computer science program in the past three years selected for the CRAs mentorship program. Valerie Gartland is a junior computer science major Stutient Art Exhibition Featured in Belk Students from WCUs department of art are sharing examples of their work from the past academic year at the 2004 Student Art Exhibition, open through April 30 in the gallery of the Belk Building on the WCU campus. The annual juried exhibition, sponsored by the art department and WCUs Art Student League, includes work from ail of the disciplines offered in the curriculum of the university's undergraduate degree programs in art. It features student works in a wide range of media, including painting, drawing, sculpture, ceramics, photography, printmaking/bookarts and graphic design/multimedia. The WCU Art Student League is a student organization that funds extracurricular and professional opportunities for art students. The exhibition is open to the public free of charge. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 9 A.M. until noon and 1 until 4 P.M. Music Department Presents : Civic Orchestra Concert The music department at WCU will present a concert by the WCU Civie Orchestra on Friday, April 30. The 8 P.M. show will feature student soloists who were the winners of the Jackson County Arts Council Student Solo Competition. The concert will take place in the recital hall of the Coulter Building. The program will include compositions by Mozart, Delibes, Donizetti and Chabrier.
