  • i wc_ commentary Not All Christians Share WBCs Views By Danielle Nicholson | WC The opening of the Laramie Project brings Pastor Fred Phelps from Westboro Baptist Church (WBC) in Topeka, KS, along with controversy, to our campus. Phelps claims to live by the Bible and preach the Gospel. Gospel means glad tidings or good news. Perusing the main website (www.godhatesfags.com ) and the manifesto of WBC, I found anything but good news. The church manifesto includes two very audacious statements. We are a TULIP Baptist Church! We believe-and vigorously preach-the 5 Points of Calvinism! Anyone preaching otherwise is a Hell-bound false prophet, a messenger of Satan, to whom we say...Let him be accursed of God! The five points of Calvinism: Total depravity, Unconditional election, Limited atonement, Irresistible grace and Perseverance of the saints. The other statement they make is this: To...[those] believing and preaching that God loves every individual of mankind- we say, you are going to Hell! Period! End of discussion! Gods decree sending you to Hell is irreversible! Hypocrites! How can ye escape the damnation of Hell?! To an average female college student, age 22, such as myself, this does not sound at all like good news. It did not inspire me to believe what they believe, and I did not desire to be in any way, shape or form associated with them. I began to wonder what others, who claim to follow the same Bible and serve the same God as Fred Phelps and his followers, thought. I decided to ask. I interviewed six students and one alumnus of WCU who simply believe the Bible, are involved with a church body, and try to live by the teachings of the Bible. The responses I got were very much the same from all seven individuals! Logically, it makes sense. They all believe the same scripture and all follow the same teachings. What struck me as unique, however, is that their beliefs and ideas did not coincide with those of Fred Phelps. On their website, there is a list of what they believe and scripture to back it up. WBC and Fred Phelps contend: SODOMY IS AN ABOMINABLE SIN, WORTHY OF DEATH. Tf a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death... (Leviticus 20:13). Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death... (Romans 1:32). GOD HATES ALL WORKERS OF INIQUITY. The foolish shall not stand in thy sight, thou hatest all workers of iniquity (Psalm 5:5). JESUS CHRIST DIED ONLY FOR THOSE WHO BELIEVE. For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life (John 3:16). ONLY GODS ELECT HAVE THE CAPABILITY TO BELIEVE. Therefore they could not believe, because that Esaias said again, He hath blinded their eyes, and hardened their heart; that they should not see with their eyes, nor understand with their heart, and be converted... (John 12:39,40). SODOMITES ARE PROUD OF THEIR SIN (GAY PRIDE), AND IN THAT PRIDEFUL STATE THEY CANNOT REPENT - YOU CANNOT REPENT OF SOMETHING YOURE PROUD OF. Were they ashamed when they had committed abomination? Nay, they were not at all ashamed, neither could they blush... (Jeremiah 6:15). THE SODOMITES ONLY HOPE IS TO HAVE THE UNAMBIGUOUS TRUTH PREACHED TO THEM, AND PERHAPS GOD WILL SOFTEN THEIR HEARTS AND GRANT THEM REPENTANCE TO DEPART FROM THEIR SIN AND NAME THE NAME OF CHRIST. NOT VERY LIKELY, THOUGH, SINCE GOD HAS GIVEN THEM UP. Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity (II Timothy 2:19). Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness...unto vile affections...to a reprobate mind (Romans 1:24-28). THERE IS A HELL WHERE ALL IMPENITENT SINNERS WILL RESIDE FOR ALL ETERNITY. THAT INCLUDES SODOMITES (CALLED DOGS). And they shall go forth, and look upon the carcasses of the men that have transgressed against me: for their worm shall not die, neither shall their fire be quenched (Isaiah 66:24). For without are dogs... (Revelation 22:15). All of this information was presented to the interviewees. Being a Christian leads me to look at people with compassion, through the eyes of Jesus. Gram Alsobrook, a WCU alumnus stated, I treat them with love and try my hardest to understand who they are and where they are coming from. Reading a verse or passage in context is looking at the whole picture - the verses before and after the quoted verse or passage. Kyle Toney stated that it was reading what the scripture had to say and not just grabbing random verses and putting them together to make your own truth. Toney says it is important to quote or read in context because it is possible to miss the theme or twist the meaning of the scripture, just as it is in any other piece of writing. What does the Bible say about judging people? I received several responses, all of them equal in value. Jennifer Childers quoted Luke 6:37, Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven. Toney quoted Matthew 7:2-5, For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again. He says, Basically, it all boils down to this: no one has the right to take the power or authority to judge another persons actions except Jesus Christ. He is the Perfect Lamb of God, the sinless One, who has every right to condemn us. Ironically enough, he does not condemn. In John 3:17, He says that He did not come into the world to condemn the world. Jason Fuller quoted John 8:1-11. Fuller stated that, In this scene, a sinful woman - whom scholars have found to be an adulteress (which can be equated with homosexuality - it is an act of sexual immorality) is accused by the officials of that day. They all are ready to condemn her for her actions - to stone her to death. However, the wonderful part of this story is that Jesus intercedes for her - he stands up to them and challenges them, Let anyone of you who have never sinned be the one to cast the first stone to kill her. He knew He was the only sinless one there and that no one would condemn her because no one could condemn her. After the officials left, he asked her who now condemned her & she answered no one. Thats when he told her the most wonderful news: neither did He condemn her. He then set her free from her previous sin and told her to go & sin no more. Do you think that God loves everyone and why? Adamantly, they all answered yes. Ryan Buchanan quoted John 3:16-17. Buchanan asked, How can the world not include everyone? Every single person is in the world, none of us are on another planet or in another universe. Every single one of us are in the same world that was created by the One and only Creator, and He loves all of us. Carrie Petrea quoted Romans 5:8, But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. She explained that, If God didnt love everyone, He wouldnt have sent a perfect sacrifice to redeem everyone. However, each person has the right to choose to believe or not to believe. However, God loves everyone, whether they believe it or not. Obviously the Christians I interviewed do not believe that Fred Phelps and his congregation present an accurate view of Christians or Christianity. Perhaps they should read a little more in context rather than pulling out the phrases that allow them to hate instead of love. Ow ew SSS ee ERR eRe a ey
